Hey everyone just thought that i would ask another question as I am still so ignorant about macs. Is there a way to optimize our macs (macbooks) I was just wondering if macs had something like defrag or disc optimization like windows does or does tiger pretty much self maintain itself. Sometimes I feel certain apps load slower than other times and my macbook seems like it is bogged down but not often! Again thank you kindly for all the help!!

Mac OS X does it by itself. If I recall correctly, whenever a file is accessed by the OS it is scanned and defragged as required on the fly.

OS X does run some routine maintenance tasks at particular times of the day (about 2am on Tuesdays I think is the setting). For most people this is ok as (like me) they just leave their Macs on all the time. You can run the manually yourself but I'm not sure they make much difference really.

Unless you're working with very large files, you don't need to defrag. Tiger defrags small (under 20 MB or so) files on the fly. It also runs maintenance scripts during the night if your Mac is not turned off. That's pretty much all you need...

Thank you's for the quick replies...I guess my next question is how does one set up these auto maintenance scripts. I dont let my mac run all night. I used to leave my old Dell laptop plugged in all the time and after awhile the battery went so now the battery wont ever hold a charge. I dont know if macbooks are like that at all but I just got it and I dont wanna fry the battery this soon hehe

As long as you calibrate your battery monthly, leaving it plugged overnight should be fine. All batteries degrade over time, so there's no avoiding that. But leaving your Mac plugged in at night shouldn't accelerate that.

As for customizing maintenance scripts, a lot of people like to use OnyX. It appears that the makers of OnyX have just released a new program called Maintenance. I haven't looked at it to see how it differs from OnyX, but those may be two good options.
