NOOB Question- Deciding Factor

Hey guys I've been debating whether to buy an iPhone and the main factor is this:

My school (University of Miami) has campus-wide wireless access. Meaning, I'd be able to use my iPhone's internet/email/everything while at school (which is 9-12 hours a day). My question is, will I be able to connect to their network, even though it's not a laptop? Sorry if this is a dumb question but I honestly don't know what their protocols are and whether they allow such a device. If anyone uses theirs on a college campus or has any answers please let me know. Thankyou in advance

Yeah, you should be able to connect no problem. I use my school's wifi all the time and it works flawlessly. I only use the att edge internet when nothing else is available. Usually schools have a lock on their connection, meaning that you have to be enrolled and have a student id and a password to use it. As long as you have one, then you should be good to go.

Thanks for the quick replies! Well i just looked up the process on my school's website and you have to produce a MAC address in order to be able to connect to the network. Does the iphone have such an address?

Yes, the iPhone has a MAC address. All devices that use TCP/IP have MAC addresses for each interface (i.e. your notebook has at least two, one for ethernet and one for wifi).

The MAC address is very loosely like your network adapter's student ID number. It identifies it as that specific piece of hardware. You can spoof that (not really important here), but that's the basic idea.

Just go get it, it will work. I have yet to find a wifi network it does not work on.

You will be able to connect to their wifi just like any other laptop would do.
There's no difference whether you're connectiong using your Iphone or a regural laptop, same exact thing.

You need to make sure that they don't require a special user agent program, and that they don't require 802.1X authentication protocol support. (Some campuses do.)

The iPhone supports neither option.

I looked at my school's website and there is a tutorial for using the UM email client specifically with an iphone so i find it hard to believe that it won't work on their network. I'm still keeping my fingers crossed though
