noob questions

ok don't all throw stones at me but I don't own an apple. I know they are awesome, I used to sell a ton of them and I made an ASC a ton of dough in the process. I just haven't gotten around to getting my laptop yet....my question htough is I am fairly savvy at navigating my directory in my xp pro machine and am pretty good at following directions. my question is do I need an OS X machine to hack an iPhone?

and just because I might have missed the info are any of these in the works for the iPhone:
1-cut and paste
2-picture messageing(sending a picture through the sms system)
3-useing the camera on the iPhone as a video recorder
4-getting just a little more web functionality out of the phone by allowing the audio, video, or flash apps to run on the iPhone
5-some sort of GPS antenna, something that works on bluetooth and an application in conjunction with the iPhone

I am pretty sure all of those are simply software related and could be achived with the proper programming skills. Or are there limitations on the phone that prevent these things from happening hardware wise


Sorry for the lame ass questions, I'm pretty new to the owning an apple thing so I've never really felt comfortable risking one of them.

got it thanks for the heads up I appreciate the words of warning and will make sure that I ask questions that are more carefully phrased in the future. what I meant was..........drat how to phrase it..........are there any extraneous non apple supported interface modules that can be accomplished outside of an OSX box.....wow that sounded way wrong, like I could pull a muscle in the process or something.


as for the bluetooth I was just wondering if there was a peripheral or maybe a non apple supported third party accessory from like Garmin or Magellan or something

Also, you dont need a OS X machine to hack a iPhone (if you mean the SSH then modding it etc.) just get iPHUC and jailbreak for Windows.

The GPS add on it absolutely possible. The problem with it won't be with the GPS, it's with the maps and software. Since presently, there's no way to add apps or software, it would have to be sanctioned by Apple, or it won't happen until (or if) Apple opens up the phone to 3rd parties.

There sort of is a GPS on there (Google Maps) but you have to manually tell it when you've done a turn.

3-useing the camera on the iPhone as a video recorder - Depends... software can address the streaming capture but the hardware has to be adequate for good imaging. This phone's camera hardware doesn't adjust to rapid changes very well. My advice has always been, though, that if you want a video camera get a video camera. If you want a still camera get a still camera... If you want a phone get a phone. Every time you try to get a bundle of different technologies you get shortchanged on one or more of them.

4-getting just a little more web functionality out of the phone by allowing the audio, video, or flash apps to run on the iPhone - Mostly software. Could benefit from hardware acceleration but in principle can be done in software, but not as fast.



5-some sort of GPS antenna, something that works on bluetooth and an application in conjunction with the iPhone - Sorry, hardware. No GPS antenna = No GPS. It could be a datacabled add-on possibly, but that would ruin the elegant form factor of the iPhone. The only other method is cellular tower triangulation and that isn't as accurate and won't satisfy those who are proactively demanding GPS in an iPhone.

Difference between noob and nub...

More so than an often i tend to post things that aren't as relevant to the OT as they should be. With that said I must say that there is still hope for you. Your questions are noob in nature but fortunately not nub in nature.

Nothing wrong with being a noob. In my book a noob is new and can be eager to learn (such as yourself) and can be easily shown the ways (such as we do).

If you were a nub however, in my book, you've been around as a noob for waaayyy to long and still haven't learned a thing. You have graduated to nub and will probably remain that way.
