NOOOOO! I've had my Macbook since July, and it's staining now!

Ugh. I noticed some discolored edges along the bezel around the keys and trackpad a few days ago, and ignored it. Well, tonight, I took a damp cloth to the entire laptop, and noticed a yellow stain that just wouldn't go away. I have staining.

Currently, it's rather light, and I'm probably the only one who can notice it right off the bat. I showed my mom, and while she didn't immediately notice it, when I pointed it out, she agreed it was plain as day.

This Macbook is my only computer. I have to have it for reports and essays, as well as internet. I'm really at a loss for what to do. My birthday is at the end of January. What are the odds of me being able to keep the staining unnoticable until then? If I can make it till my birthday, I could buy the iMac I was planning on getting before college a bit early. Then, when I get my new iMac, I could send in my Macbook.

What is the turn-around time on these. If I drive down to the Apple Store tommorrow (Hour there, hour back), after getting an appointment, when could I expect to get it back? One week? Two weeks? A month?

This is very disappointing. It hasn't steered me away from Apple, but it does put a major damper on my first Mac owning experience. I thought I did good by waiting until I could get a post-week 25 MB, but apparently that wasn't enough.

And just to be sure, there is zero chance of being able to exchange this MB on the spot, correct? I just don't know what I'm gonna do without a computer... I rely on it. If it could be back by Friday, I could probably make due since it is a three-day school week. However, I have a feeling I won't see my baby back for three weeks or more. That just isn't do-able.

How fast does the staining spread? Do I have a good chance of making it until late January? Or is that out of the question?

Sorry for all the questions... I'm just really frustrated right now. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

They told me it could take up to a week to do mine, but it was ready the next day. Of course, depending on availability, it could take longer, but I wouldn't expect it to be more than a day or two. Have a contingency plan though, don't take it in two days before you have to write a paper. I don't think waiting will be an issue, though, because it's covered under warranty which is a year.

You can use it until they get the part in, then they only had mine for a day. Pretty good, really.

^^^ So, I can I just call up the Apple store. Tell them that I have the staining problem, and I'd like to get it fixed. Then they call me when they get the part, I drop it off, then come back in a day or two to pick it up at the store?

If that's the case, I might as well just get it out of the way. So... Do they fix it in-store?

I'd guess you'd bring it in and then they order the part (assuming they have none), not the other way around.

I had two Macbooks go in at the peak of the 'Macbook has Issues' period and for a failure, the Macbook took in excess of two weeks to be turned around which resulted in me buying another one as a spare. That also developed problems, as well as the staining problem when I lent it to a friend after the first Macbook came back. In both of those cases turnaround was around a week. Then I lent my friend the other Macbook out of curiosity and that came back stained and also had a functional issue, so that went back and that was over a week. Then the first MB started developing more issues and that was when I decided I'd had enough of Mac laptops for actually portable use.

I think it depends entirely on how busy Apple's subcontractors in your area is to be honest.

i don't know why they didn't keep the same type of plastic as on the iBooks... i've had my iBook over a year with no problems what so ever and the shiny look makes it look even sweeter

It was a production issue. From what I know it's not a problem with more recent builds.

Anyone know what build weeks were affected? To the OP, what week is yours?

It shouldn't be an issue. Most Apple Stores have the parts in stock and they can be repaired in just a few hours.

Not sure exactly. I bought mine on release day, I think it's week 26-28. It's beginning to get staining (not yellow, but darker grey, almost like pencil smudges). I need to take it into the Apple store and chew them out a bit.
