I thought that I finally had the perfect computer with this new i7, which was sweet because I returned four of the previous imac's, but I just noticed a piece of lint or some type of fiber under the glass. As much as I would like to just keep this one because it is finally "perfect" in every other way, I just cant do it, not when this thing was $2500. It seems like alot of people are reporting that the new iMac has most of its issues worked out, so hopefully the replacement will be as good as this one.

Or you could just use it as an excuse to open it up and replace drive...feeling adventurous?

Ha, Im not gonna be the guinea pig on that experiment, but I'd also like to know how difficult it is because I'd love a new SSD in this thing (just not for the $600 apple is charging right now). No, this one is going back to apple.

From things other people have posted - they won't replace it.. they'll just clean it out for you. Call up Apple to verify.

Yep, if the machine is otherwise perfect. Going to an Apple Store to have the screen cleaned is the best shot.

Otherwise you hop on the machine swap merry go round.

Its only one day old, so if they refuse to replace it, Ill just return it within my 14 day window. If the manufacture cant even keep it clean, there is no way that I trust my local apple store to do so. It would probably come back dirtier that it is now.

You are missing what everyone is saying, a little dirt is easy to clean.

The store will send it back clean.

What will happen if you swap it, is getting another problematic machine with the problems you had in the first 4.

---

It is Apple karma, send in a machine for 1 dead pixel, get 3 dead pixels back. They keep a list of OCD customers to play with (seems like it.)

Plus if you let them fix it after all the problems, I wouldn't be too surprised to see you come out with a free iPod, AppleCare, or a gift certificate.

I've seen more people complain on this forum about crap under their screen after sending their imac in for repair than I have seen people complain about brand new computers with crap under the screen. Maybe thats not the case though in reality? I guess Im hoping that the problems that I had with the previous four are problems that have been corrected on the refresh.

No way - just take it into a store and have them clean it. You can verify the work before you take it back there and then. If it's still dirty, make them clean it again.

If everything is is perfect, this is the best option.

you'll have to pay a restocking fee

I think it's a good idea, so you can verify the work by asking them to turn on the computer as you're there (after the cleaning) ... :)

It sounds like this is the consensus, but Im still nervous about pulling this thing off my desk, sticking it in the back of my car, and hauling it into the apple store where someone is going to open up a 1 day old computer. Its really much easier for me to just stick this thing in the mail and wait for the new one. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate all of your comments and input, I think Ill just have to think things over for a few days. I guess I just have faith in apple right now that if I order a new one, the problems of the previous iMac will have been worked out. I think apple has to much integrity to let those problems go unresolved, and as a result I think I can get another "perfect" computer without lint under the glass.

See, the rest of us have enough faith in Apple that you'll still be swapping machines in 6 weeks looking for a perfect one.

Seems to be the nature of the OCD beast, an easily corrected problem that takes a day ... or take the easy way out and still be doing this in 6 weeks.

We have enough faith in getting "perfect" 27 inch machines that we always tell people with perfect screens to have the machine fixed for other minor problems, instead of taking a risk on getting a worse screen.

I think you're making it sound a whole lot harder than it is! If all you have is a little piece of lint under the screen, just take it to the store instead of going through the whole swap process...AGAIN. Just put a giant plush set of blankets down in your car and put your iMac face down in the blankets. Or, it sounds like you still have all the box material since you want to ship it back. Just repack it up enough to transport it to your local apple store. It'll probably take them 10 minutes and you can inspect everything there before you come home.

Do you wanna risk with a new one when you have a perfect one than can be "repared" just taking the front mirror (by professionals) and clean it?

Just so you know, the previous 4 imacs that I returned were sent back for hardware issues, not sensory issues. It had nothing to do with me being OCD, looking for a screen with a little less yellow tint, or for one with a little quieter hard drive, ect. They were sent back because of two HD failures, one power source failure, and one had a cracked screen on arrival. So when I say that this one is perfect I mean that it has a HD that works and it isn't about ready to start an electrical fire. So, if apple can give me another one that meets these criteria, I'll be happy.

Like I said, I appreciate the input from everyone, and Im thinking about it.

I am so glad you dont shop where i work. You are such a whiner. They come with warranties for a reason. Take a deep breath and repeat after me. "Everything is going to be ok" Take it in and have them spray a little windex on a Lint free cloth.

I'm so glad that I don't shop where you work, because you sound like a condescending jerk. At what point did I whine? All I said was that I was bummed out that my new iMac has lint under the screen, and then I thanked everyone in this thread twice for their input on the matter.

The vast majority of people on this forum are so helpful, and then there are the few like you that fail to contribute anything of value to the conversation by making derogatory comments. So congratulations, you've single-handedly managed to take an otherwise helpful and mature thread, and dumb it down to a third grade level comprehendible to you and you alone.

Oh, and thanks for making your first post here in MacRumors, hopefully it will also be your last.

What sort of issues did you run into returning the iMacs? I'm in the process of returning one and I'm worrying about the next one having problems too.

No problems whatsoever. When it comes to customer service, Apple is unbeatable in my experience. However, all of mine were returned very soon after getting them (within a month with all of them). I believe any later than that and they have you take it to get repaired before they consider a return. They also waived the restocking fee with each of them since they were defective. My advice is to return as early as possible (within 14 days) if a problem does come up within that time period.

Ah, thanks. Gives me a bit of hope. :p

I wish I had bought it in one of their stores, though, rather than having this business about sending it back. I'm worried about them wanting to repair it rather than sending a new one out too, considering that's another opportunity for faults to arise.

Im right there with ya, if the i7 was in stores I'd buy it there in a heartbeat. I also get nervous about sending it in for repair. A former apple employee was posting on here a few days back that when he saw how some of the techs treat peoples computers he quit his job and went and got certified to do repairs himself. I know thats the exception and not the rule, but it still happens occasionally. Anyway, good luck, Im sure everything will turn out great.
