Noooooo! UK iPad release not till "June/July"

Hi All

Long time lurker, first time poster here.

I'm just off the phone with Apple UK (0800 048 0408). After selecting option two "The magical iPad", the customer service rep informed me the iPad would not be released in the UK until "June or July".

Gutted! Hopefully the rep is misinformed. Would any other UK based member try this, to confirm whether this is the case?
 
I highly doubt this is the case given that Steve Jobs said it'd be 30/60 days.

These reps often know as little as we do, so hopefully you're right. She did sound quite convinced though - which worries me.
 
I've just called them, the say that they've been told that the iPad will defo not be out in the UK until Late June/Early July.

I'm gutted now.

Apple has to look at how they communicate with their customers. Surely a press release would have been a better way of disseminating this information...
 
Think positive...

It's a first generation Apple product.
It will be full of bugs.
Let the Americans find all the problems, let Apple fix the bugs, then release it for the rest of the world. :D
 
I'm not sure I'd put too much faith in what the reps say. They're far more likely to to be conservative on a release date than to say 'you can buy one on xxxxx date'

'tis annoying if that's the case though - I may go buy something else!
 
I think the delay will be mainly due to the time it'll take to get a decent selection of books for the UK iBookstore.

If the iPad was released without the bookstore it'd have far less chance of succeeding since the iBooks app is the most impressive demo the iPad currently has.
 
Couldn't you use a US version in the UK, since its not locked to any cell phone service like the iPhone?

That's assuming you could get one shipped over to the UK, which I guess Apple.com wouldn't do, but you could probably buy one off of ebay(maybe with a little markup).

My parents are going to America next month. I might ask them to pick me one up so I can make a bit of a profit on eBay. ;)
 
I hope this isn't true, but wouldn't actually be that surprised. If it is true, I hope it is to insure that everything is working such as iBooks.
 
This just doesn't pass the smell test.

At introduction they explicitly say that wifi models will ship worldwide in 60 days.

Would Apple really let a phone rep mention anything besides "iPad is currently not available for order"?

Would a phone rep be made privy to the fact that wifi models are so constrained that they slip from 60 days to 120-180 days?

I doubt it's iBooks because Apple has shipped devices before all content stuff was ready in a given country.

The only thing remotely possible, given what is known, is that the 3G models might be delayed based on agreements with various international carriers - something that was explicitly mentioned could take until June/July.
 
As long as it keeps saying:

Wi-Fi models shipping in late March.
3G models shipping in April.
UK pricing to be announced.

I'll take that over any pleb that answers the phone.

"We now know that Apple will introduce its iPad tablet device in 60 days in the U.S., and 90 days for the 3G versions. We also learned that the international version will be available some time in June, expect to see the iPad hit the UK by the end of that month."

Can you provide a source for above press release?

The Apple UK store quite clearly states "Wi-Fi models shipping in March"

That was a mishearing of Steve's statement that international 3G deals won't be in place until June. Wi-Fi models have always been touted as worldwide availability by 60 days after the media event...late March. And the 3G models were to come within 90 days. It's just the specific 3G service deals internationally that aren't coming until June.

I want my 64GB WiFi iPad in three weeks and a 27" iMac when they're next updated.
