Does your MBP have a steady fan noise coming from the left side of the computer.
It is not high pitched or faulty sounding, just the sound you would expect out of a fan.
The MBP is at 55 dgrees C
CPU load is not over 15%

I know the MacBooks are dead silent at idle. To the point where you cannot tell if the computer is on or off without putting your ear right next to it.
Is the MacBook Pro supposed to be like this?

I also can hear my left fan at idle... when they crank up I hear both, but when I'm just surfing the internet, I do hear the fan noise on the left side.

Also, if you were plugged into the mains, then don't forget there could be a very slight hum from the power cable, as it plugs in in the left hand corner etc.

you are not alone. i've had this issue since april, a fan noise that is constantly on, emerging from the left side. it is VERY annoying if you work in a quiet environment like myself.

i could be wrong but i think it might not be the CPU/MB fans. recently i tried a fan control utility to raise the speed of the fans. i could clearly hear the fans as they increased in RPM but that whirring sound still remained unchanged.

i have had two logic boards replacements & two MBP replacements to no avail. i am trying to get a refund at this point as it seems that Apple does not know what is causing that noise. or they are in a denial stage; previously it was deemed to be a defect and they tried to rectify it, but now they are calling it 'normal operation'.

if it is bothersome, go after Apple until they fix/address it.

I was also annoyed by the fan noise, so now I undervolt. Very happy with the computer right now, cool and quiet.
