Running 12.2.1 on a 2021 16-inch MBP. i restart very infrequently, but I just noticed that the menu bar doesn’t appear after a restart unless I click on the desktop. Is this normal, a bug, a preference/setting, or has something gone wrong with my OS?

Perhaps on a related note, I get the “You shut down because of a problem” message after each restart, even when it’s not true. (I had one of those YouTube kernel panics/crashes a couple months ago, which other 2021 MBP owners reported.) Disk Utility reports no problems. Thanks.

ny somewhere
that shutdown error seems to persist thru some of the updates, showing up after a normal reboot (i've had it a bunch of times). annoying, but not problematic (unless, of course, you DID have an issue forcing a power button shutdown).

the menubar thing sounds like a redraw issue... i've seen it a few times, too; as long as it shows up when you click on the desktop, you should be ok.

Nope. That‘s Monterey for ya.
It’s probably just a bug you can get rid of resetting VRAM, but if it, as well as the panic message don’t bother you too much, wait it out.

I thought that went away with the M1? Thanks.
You’re correct, I forgot about that. In that case, try running your Mac until the battery is dead, wait some ten minutes and plug it is. See if that helps.

Simply unplugging it and leaving for a short while is sufficient to do the equivalent of resetting SMC and NVRAM on M1 Macs.....you don't need to run it until battery is dead. eg this link.

However Apple say simply restarting is sufficient to reset the SMC (link).

I have a 2021 MBP 14".

I've noticed behavior similar to that which the OP describes.
I boot up the MBP from being completely off (cover closed).
It boots quickly, but displays a desktop without a menu bar (all my other desktop icons are there, however).
If I click on the finder icon in the dock, the menu bar appears.

This could be a software glitch in Monterey, don't know.

I consider it to be a VERY "minor" glitch.
One click (on desktop or on finder icon) and, it's gone.

As they used to say in the Army a LONG time ago, "don't sweat the small ****".
