norton anti virus crashes xp

hello.


everything seems good and fine.

though a download exploded my xp and i had to reinstall, it was loaded with spyware and the like...


... so i put on norton antivirus and that freezes the thing?!



recomment a lightweight antivirus program?

Well my Mum's PC was frozen for a bit by Norton 2006 yesterday, TBH I have seen bad things with Norton, McAffee also seems rubbish, Zone Alarm is hard to use too many pop up's, you could try Clam AV which is open source (though it's as slow as hell, it took 24 hours on my iMac, at least on the Mac) http://www.clamwin.com/

There are others but I haven't used them

Norton/Symantec BLOWS. It's past it's prime. I had to perform CPR on a Windows box this week that was not even on SP2. It had like 20 viruses and was being used as a porn server. Upon installation of Norton Antivirus with all the updates, it was still broken. Auto-Protect wouldn't even stay enabled.

So to make a long story short - I downloaded BitDefender. GREAT piece of software. It found and destroyed all the crap on that box.

I know but for my Mum it takes too long, most of the time it's ImportantWindowsApp1.exe trying to access the internet with ImportantWindowsApp2.exe

(except as they are typical windows app's they are called W32DrvS.exe and W32GrkD.exe, both made up) its really hard to know whether they should have access, Zone Alarm sould follow a more minimalist approach ala Norton (although its as bloated as hell)

If your going to install norton or mcafee u should ALWAYS go with the corprate/enterprise editions not the home editions.

PS. i still find it funny that the first thing someone installs is norton

Symantec's Corporate Version 10.0 was the one that let me down - so I don't see any advantages to going that route...

In my experience loading ANYTHING by Symantec is the quickest way to kill Windows (and I hear that Norton A/V does not play well with OS X either). I use AVG anti-virus on my wife's pc and it works great, and is completely free.

Symantec's Corporate Version 10.0 was the one that let me down - so I don't see any advantages to going that route...

Symantec 10.0 is very bad and it causes a lot of problems. There is a reason my school no lorger offers it to the students. We are still offered 9.0 and that works great.

Also you never want to install a AV program of any type while a computer is loaded full of spyware, virsues and what not. Many of them out there are designed to detect the installtion of AV software and attack it before it can become active.

I use Symantec AV Corp 9.0 and it works great. I have not tried 10.0.

Norton AV 2005 works fine in Windows XP. I'm using the free (6 months) edition from Google Pack.

I use PCs as my primary computers and I have tried it all. This is what will keep your computer spyware free:

Antivirus: Avast (http://www.avast.com) It's free, easy, and the only thing you have to do is register once a year, easily the best free antivirus program out there.
Web Brwoser: Firefox (http://www.getfirefox.com) the webbrowser thats the fasteset, easiest, speediest, you name it. It's also the most secure and stops 95% of the stuff that IE lets breeze on through.
Firewall: Kerio (http://www.kerio.com) The non pro version is free, and though its not supported any more, its leaps and bounds better than zonealarm
Generic Cleaner: (http://www.ccleaner.com) as its name implies, it cleans the crap out of the system. Amazing program that also fixes registry errors.

Well, I hope this helps someone out, It's definitly the best stuff out there IMO.

Firewall: Sygate Personal Firewall (although its owned by symantec, its not like any of the norton products, very lightweight and completely free unless you want to use it for a business)

I use Kaspersky Anti Virus, Ad-Aware, and Zone Alarm Firewall.

Kaspersky sometimes has trouble removing things, but finds everything. I sometimes have to remove some of the things it finds manually

AVG Free edition is the best freeware anti-virus for XP. I've been using it for a long time. AVG even has a verison for Linux so it may work in OS X (don't quote me, I haven't played with a mac for quite sometime)

For firewall right now I'm using ZA Pro trial edition when the trail expires I'll go back to Kerio,you should look into it for your mother it doesn't require any training.
