Norton AntiVirus 9.0 woes

I downloaded and installed the trialware of Norton AntiVirus 9.0. It made my PB Ti 15,5" 867 MHz running 10.3.3 crash every time I used it. You know, like when the screen fades to grey and you get that omnius apple message "your computer needs to restart". I tried uninstalling it but to no avail. The uninstaller that comes with the demo gives an error message. Seems it can't manage uninstalling the Norton Autoprotect, which automatically logs on when I log on. It doesnt show up in the startup objects menu in the system preferences so i don't know how to manually remove it. Anybody got an Idea how to rid oneself of this crappy demo?

I took NAV off my PB667 a while ago, seems like I had to use the install CD to remove it. Then, I threw the CD in the trash.

Norton for Macs is NOT a good idea. Its probably for the best that they stopped supporting the platform.

Best of luck getting it off your system. It might be time for a re-install of the OS?

why did you want to install Norton in the first place anyway? that's just useless...

the only sort of 'diagnostic' software i've used it TechTools (Pro 4, i think) for defrag and other sort of stuff like that. but even that isn't really necessary... OS X has a sort of automated de-frag built-in.

when i want to completely get rid of software, i just search for all the associated files, in this case you shoudl search for 'Norton' everywhere on your computer, or at least the Library folders and delete all the Norton preference files that turn up, as well as anything in Application Support folder as well. good luck getting it off.

Yep, I agree. Get rid of it by using the Find function, and never even consider installing it again

Norton is just discontinuing support and updates on the Norton SystemWorks, specifically Norton Utilities. They plan to continue to support and update Norton Antivirus, Norton Internet Security, & Norton Firewall for Mac OS X. I've only really had a major problem with Norton once. It required a call to technical support at Norton. The problem ended up that I didn't did a proper uninstall, when the error occurred.

don't forget the invisible files... the drive you have norton app(s) on has plenty of invisible files on the root of the drive. you should delete those too. btw is there any good alternatives for NAV? I'm using it too.. no real problems, but I don't like it putting all kinds of stuff everywhere I don't want virex but I need a virus app for work (so that those stupid things don't spread to pc's through mail)..

Just a thought but our ISP provides us with a virus protection firewall at the incoming router (their home mail server) the only thing we get now are attachments on erroneous messages that we delete immediately

There was a demo available, and I wanted to check for virus, since there has been a lot of viral activity over mail lately. And it came with an uninstaller, which I expected to work.

I wasn't too precise was I... I'm working at home and don't want the stupid attachments to continue their way to PCs.

whatever.. I'm probably gonna dumb the thing sooner or later because I'm getting tired of people buying PCs and then whining about viruses. Macs aren't that much more expensive

the uninstaller is not compatible with Panther. go here to download an unistaller that is.
