Ok, so at last weeks event, we saw the iPhone 4 providing a modest upgrade to the existing model. Nothing too major, just a speed bump and a fix (or update) for the antenna.

Now, for the iPods all we saw was a new OS update for the Nano, and white becoming an option on the iPod Touch (makes sense since they are now doing it on the similar built iPhone). But no updates other than that.

Unless I'm missing something, we've just gone the first year in quite a while now that we've not had an iPod hardware update.

I'm wondering if this is going to become the norm, moving it to a 2 year cycle with a minor (maybe just OS related) update in the middle of a cycle (a bit like the iPhone in some respects).

I think they may actually be able to get away with it if iOS updates are to continue rolling out as slow as they are (otherwise the iTouch would be crippled). Maybe its in response to the last (pre-retina) iPod Touch, which was being sold with iOS 4 until a refresh was done, even though it clearly couldn't handel it.

I'd chalk it up to not being able to add much more to the iPod touch without making it an iPhone, the nano still feeling new to a lot of people, the shuffle being about as good as it can possibly be, and the classic being mostly irrelevant.

However, I was a little surprised that there was nothing significantly different about the nano considering that touch screen is pretty much impossible to use while running. I guess the Apple headphone button is their solution for now.

I'm thinking they'll implement siri across the board.

That's why I'm probably getting a Classic this year - they'll probably axe it next year and I want one in 160GB before then.

Maybe next year we'll see some hardware updates. Especially to the Nano (6th gen = horrific!)

i keep waiting for an upgraded iPod classic
but it looks like i may as well give up
i want/need the space though
so maybe like you @illumination
i'll just go ahead and get one before they get rid of it completely?

I'm pretty sure the Nano include a hardware update as the Nike sensor is no longer required. Unless they did it all with software.

I thought Apple would have implemented Bluetooth in all there devices by now. Since Apple believes flash is a dated technology, it should also get rid of IR since that is also old tech.

Well, I'm surprised that they didn't at least upgrade the processor and memory on the iPod Touches. I thought they wanted to compete in the portable gaming market? This year's update, in my opinion, was a fail; a fail for serious iPod fans and customers. Though, Apple will still be makin' quite a lot of money off of their "old tech" anyway. :apple:

Yeah ironic ain't it? Promote it as a gaming device yet don't even bother throwing in the processor update.

I also don't think we will see the elusive 128GB iPod Touch ever because Apple wants people to get iCloud and pay for capacity yearly. I'm certainly not going to be paying $100 a year for a pathetic 50GB of capacity.

How often does Nintendo Wii, Sony Playstation, Xbox, etc. get upgraded?

Not even close.

It seems that Apple is now putting iPod touch 1 generation behind iPhone. If you want the iPhone, get an iPhone.

That's why customers should support competition instead of praising Apple for everything.

I do; I have both a PSP and a Nintendo DS. I personally think that iOS is a pathetic platform for handheld games. The quality and playability pale in comparison to a real handheld console. Oh well, most people don't think that way, and iOS will continue to grow. I think it has a lot to do with the convenience of having an all-in-one device. That, and no twenty something year -old would want to be seen in public playing a PSP or God forbid, a Nintendo DS.

a) some of us don't want to pay $2,000+ (which would be the cost of the contract + Phone) for the iPhone.
b) the iPhone is priced the same as the iPod Touch except it has a contract on top of it, doesn't make much of an incentive to get an iPhone over the iPod Touch. I'd like to get one without a contract but those prices are even more ridiculous.
c) not interested in the price gouging going on with wireless carriers when it comes to internet access. 2GB for $30+ a month is so 18 years ago. Only one even offering near true unlimited is Sprint and the pricing is still ludicrous.
d) the iPod Touch is a different device from the video game consoles, for one there are apps being made for it EVERYDAY on the app store, two the A5 is 7x times faster than the A4 which is undoubtedly going to lead to compatibility issues with some apps. How well the device stands the test of time will be determined with how many developers jump to taking advantage of the A5. This will be seen with time to whether or not the iPod Touch is able to run the latest apps. I don't have much faith just for the simple fact Apple isn't really a company known to support old devices for long.

It makes perfect sense that the money makers get the latest updates (iPad/iPhone) but it doesn't mean the iPod Touch should be made obsolete via lack of hardware updates.

Its a brilliant scheme to get people to change over to the iPhone, that way they make a constant profit. They can do what they want but I don't have to like it. This is what happens when there is no competition in the market, they'll sell their products in the same configuration year after year, I honestly don't have much faith that the iPod Touch will be updated next year either.
