Not able to mount any usb drives after upgrading to sur.

I tried the disk utility to mount the drives, get Could not mount “name of drive.. ”. (com.apple.DiskManagement.disenter error 49153.)

Now I wonder! I can’t mount my time machine drives and I thought I might have to erase them and make new time machine drives but now I wonder if I can mount ANY USB drives...

Thge problem is with Big sur, not our devices, I have tried everything. Lets hope apple can come up with a fix update asap.

I have a similar problem, but weirder. I can mount my USB-hard drive on one of my Big sur machines, but not on the other.

If you go to Disk utility and try to mount it from there, which error do you get?

Interesting. I have a usb mouse that's working ok and I just put a couple of usb sticks in and they're ok too.
Is it any usb device that's a problem?

Just FYI an update: I tried mounting a USB stick drive. Worked fine. It's just my Time Machine hard drives (USB, SSD) that do not show up. They DO show up in Disk Utility, but not on my desktop and I can't tell the OS to backup to them.

Very strange, my drives do show in Disk utility as not mounted, try to mount them, then get an error as above

I used two different disks for Time Machine. Just used Disk Utility to erase one and now set it up as my first Big Sur Time Machine backup. Just seeing how it goes, but Disk Utility was able to erase it and all that jazz.

I don't know if you simply can't use the Time Machine backup from Catalina on Big Sur, if you always have to set up the backup as new. Don't know, but it looks like I have to! Which of course means I will lose all of my backups from before.

Looking forward to next update fix
Do you have any 3rd party drivers, such as Paragon NTFS installed? Google searching tells me this error isn't specific to Big Sur but can be caused by the Paragon driver.

I have always used paragon without any problem.
I downloaded the latest version for sur, did not work for me, currently trying to get some support from paragon.

I will try tuxera tomorrow.

Thanks for that. I have now installed "tuxera", and can see all my drives.

That sounds unrelated. What app is trying to open?

Yes, it is unrelated, I put it out there incase some else has the same problem after Sur update. Downloaded a file from net
Without knowing what kind of file you have and what app is trying to open, nobody can help.

This is hardly a new problem. Starting back in Sierra none of my Macs would recognize my external HDDs. They would, however, recognize thumb drives. I haven't tried either since installing BS (unfortunate abbreviation), but I will shortly to see if the issue has been fixed or expanded.

edit: I just checked both my external HDDs and my thumb drives. The thumb drives mount, however, the external drives STILL are not recognized by the OS.

And no errors when connecting the drives?
No errors at all. When I connect thumb drives (USB sticks) they mount just fine. When I connect the external HDDs I get no message whatsoever. The drive powers up (and the light comes on) but it doesn't mount—not seen in Disk Utility or using the terminal commands—it's as if the drive isn't connected.

I just tried plugging in my TM backup external drive and it did not appear on the desktop.
I got this displayed
Screenshot 2020-11-18 at 16.06.56.png

I put in the password and after a few seconds it appeared on my desktop.

This is really obvious but the external drives option is ticked to show on the desktop in your Finder preferences isn't it?
In my fresh install it wasn't ticked.
