Today I had a chance to take a look at one of our lecturer's new Macbook Pro (matt) display, and while his also has some of the graininess, it is not as annoying as mine because his screen has a much much better viewing angle.

Not really convinced I stood on tip toe over it and looked down at it from the top, and there is very little colour shift, you can still pretty much make out the colours on the screen! So I went to check his display's model number under Color Profiles and it is... a 9C60.

When I look down at my display the way the way as I did to his, it all shifts to a orangish-grey hue, so the good question now is, how is the model number from the colour profiles generated? Is it just an ICC file that is labeled with that information which Apple preloaded with the laptop in the factory?

Hey, I wish I knew the answers to your questions. I just wanted to say that I agree with you 100% that not all displays are created equal... this is my second MBP c2d, and the grain is a lot more noticeable than on my 1st model!

I ordered a 2.16 C2D MBP last Monday that ended up being shipped from China, arriving last Thursday (so I'm assuming it was rather recently off the assembly line, but I could be wrong).

It too has a 9C60 screen that has grain, but not noticeably more than the grain in my partner's 15" "hi-res" 1.67 PB screen. The viewing angle of my MBP is almost the same as the PB. I'm a little jealous my screen won't tilt back as far, but it's workable enough when on my lap, so I'll live. Neither screen look anything as "clear" (grain-free) as our friends 12" PB screen.

FWIW, my first Apple notebook was the 15" "hi-res" 1.67 PB with the infamous "horizontal banding" screen. It took Apple 4-5 months to get it all sorted out (but it was a pretty miserable 4-5 months for people, with Apple at first not doing anything, saying it was in spec, etc), but once they did deal with it, I had no problem shipping my PB back in for repair. They put a LCD from a different manufacturer in it and shipped it back. That new LCD fixed the horizontal banding, but it had the thin, differently lighted strips around the perimeter of the screen, like my C2D MBP now does. Never really bothered me. Anyway, I hope that Apple is able to sort this out for those that have crappy C2D screens.

my 9C61 sux!

sorry to dissapoint but my matte 096C1 screen on my 17inch MBP C2D is bad. I don't have any grain problems, but I have that light "stripe" on the bottom and the upper left corner is pretty dark. The whole backlight is very uneaven! I went to my dealer righht away and he orderd a replacement screen. I'm still waiting for it to arrive.... anyway , I guess the Modelnumber doesn't tell you too much about screen quality. Many people seem to say that the screens on the 17inch are great, but I disagree. Every single C2D 17inch matte I've seen had exactly the same problems as mine ->uneaven backlight, stripe at the bottom. My friends 17inch G4 screen has a very eaven backlighting and its screen technology from three years ago! I hope my next screen is a lot better...

I went to the local Apple reseller and asked to put together MacBook and 15' MacBook Pro. The difference in quality of the screen was shocking! Both had glossy display but cheaper MacBook was "clean" (without this dirty looking coating on MBP 15'), viewing angles were better too. We checked some gradients which were posted here and again Macbook displayed them without banding and its "Pro" brother showed terrible banding. There was no uneven backlight on Macbook and again "Pro" model had dark bottom corners and slight light bleedeing at the bottom.
The funny thing is that my macbook pro is "dirtier" (the bloody coating or antiglare or whatever crap apple put on their lcd) but I dont have bad uneven backlight. Just the viewing angles are the reason for screen beeing uneven colourwise. I cant stand it but I will hold decision abut repairing untill it will be clear that Apple sorted crappy macbook pro screens.

I have 9C57 and I think it's pretty good, but my girlfriend's 9C56 is perfect in terms of white and black.

I don't understand why you still have the belief the 17" MBP have good displays. THEY DO NOT. They are crap. I and others here have noted this many times. I even told you a few days ago.

I thought we already had a forum about complaining about the MacBook Pro screens? No? This is starting to get old, although, I don't care anymore because I'm the proud owner of a brand new refurbished Mac Pro Dual 2.66GHz Dual Core Xeons! So BOO-YA!

Yes, it's true. It's getting tired, but then again it's very tiring for all owners with expensive computers with poor displays too. I wish Apple would just come forward with a statement like this:

" Dear customer,
Apple has discovered that some displays used in the macbook pro 15" and 17" series have displays that do not meet Apple's stringent quality standards. The affected displays may displays a certain graininess when viewing solid colors. They may also be affected by narrow viewing angles. If you think your computer displays is defective, please call Apple or visit an Apple authorised service center to see if you qualify for repair."


This would allow Apple to repair at its discretion and would help ease the current dissatisfaction felt by many MBP owners. I doubt they'd do this, but we can always hope.

Yes, they are crap, but I took a look at them in the nearby store and they are much better than the 15"

So to put it in very simple terms.

17" is crap
but 17" is ALOT better than 15"
15" is super crap.

Going from super crap to crap is a big step up IMO :eek:

The big irony is when I was getting the MBP I wondered if the money could have been better spent on a MP... same price... and wtf is this crap :mad:
