Not as lively as the MBP forum.

Since I've been spending less time in the MBP forum lately (sold my MBP) and more time over here (just bought an iMac), I've noticed it's no where near as lively over here. In fact, it's kind of dead sometimes compared to over there.

Is this because there is just a more imminent refresh on the horizon causing a lot of hootin' and hollerin', or are they usually just a rowdy bunch year round? Lol.

I think there are just more MBP owners on the forum, plus the updates are discussed as soon as one revision is out.

I used to think exactly this. "Who the hell wants a desktop?"

Then I got to thinking about it. The iMac has 1 cable. It's attractive and compact needing only the monitor.

For 600-700 less than the comparable (use that term loosely) 17"MBP, I could a huge beautiful screen and better specs in some areas.

Then I looked at how much I actually have used my laptops in my life in places other than my couch. Hardly any. Furthermore, all the times I did use them when I was away from home could have been done on my ipad or even my iphone.

I put my new Imac on my side table next to my lay z boy. Looks great, most comfortable "office" chair in the house and I don't have a laptop cooking my testicles.

Had I not been able to put the iMac in my living room, I probably would have went with the MBP but my situation made much more sense to save the 600 and get more (imo) for my money by going with the iMac/ipad route.

Heh, and i have always thougt the exact oppoite I could never even imagine using a laptop at home and since im just that... almost always at home it's just too weird.

I used a laptop only the last months before i bought my iMac because i needed to sell my desktop-pc and i must say that i really hated to always work on a laptop. Sure, it's great for when you want to travel or "move around"... but other than that... no

Yeah, the only reason I ever enjoyed a laptop was for portability for Internet viewing and videos. The iPad takes care of those functions perfectly, so now I'm just looking forward to getting my iMac next week

The iPad is what solidified me going with the i7 iMac over a new MacBook Pro. I realized like RuggedPro that I used my MacBook at home 99% of the time. And when I WAS away using the laptop, I didn't need the power of a MBP - I was doing simple things - email and internet for the most part. My iPad has completely taken over that role.

So... For the money a new i7 MBP (that while powerful, still gives up power for portability) would have cost me, I was able to purchase an i7 iMac that is much more powerful (and comes with a great display as well. ). Since I would have been using the MBP at home on my desk 99% of the time (and would have bought an ACD for it) the iMac was the obvious choice for me.

I think that a lot of people are like me and with some analysis would probably find that an iPad or base MacBook Air and an iMac would be a better choice than a MBP and an ACD.

The majority of the younger crowd mainly use laptops more than desktops and i'm sure more teenagers and people in their 20s post on this board than the older crowd.

With laptops you have the portability factor, where you can take them everywhere with you, including in the classroom for notetaking, which can't be done with a desktop. Also college kids moving into a dorm. Little easier to bring a laptop with you than desktop.

Someone like me, who mostly owned a desktop in my life rather have both, both most don't feel the need to so they choose the option where they can have their computer at all times, and that usually is a laptop.
