Not Charging on Windows Machines

Saw this over at tuaw.com - seems like a pretty big mess up on Apple's part

Consumer Reports has discovered that thus far, iPads can not be recharged using the USB ports on any non-Apple computer.

The places where the iPad did charge, in their tests, included an iMac and a MacBook Pro. The iPad would not charge using any USB ports on several Windows machines, nor through the USB port on an Apple wired keyboard connected to the iMac.

They're not the only ones to notice it. Our own Steve Sande just noticed that his iPad, which is linked to a USB hub connected to his iMac, is not charging through the hub.

Apple Tech Support told Consumer Reports that the iPad was designed to be powered using the wall charger. Dave Caolo also was informed by Apple retail staff that using the iPad charger to charge your iPhone is not recommended.

If you don't have a Mac, for now you're better off using the wall charger to power the device. Have you found other places where the iPad is not charging? Talk about it in the comments, or click through and let Consumer Reports know as well.

I had this problem as well, when I sync I would like it to charge a little.

gee this sounds as much "fun" as when the touch came out and wouldn't charge thru the firewire style chargers and docs. Way to go, Apple! Always looking out for the consumer!
 
I'm also using a hub and it's not charging, though I'm on a Mac.

The other items plugged in to the hub are a wireless external keyboard, a wired mouse, and a printer. My Time Machine HD is plugged directly into the MBPro.

Anyone with a powered hub having difficulties?
 
I've seen posted all over the place that it has to do with power requirements. It won't charge on a low power USB port unless you put it to sleep (the screen goes off).

You can charge it with the screen on only on some newer Apple computers and when using the included 10w adapter (Included in the box! That's why it's there! lol).

I have tested it on my MacBook Pro 15 unibody and 27' iMac and it is charging fine.

i thought due to the power requirements it wont charge on a computer via USB intentionally ?

i remember a few year back when some USB ports used to burn out due to devices drawing to much power before the power standards were set.
