So all of a sudden, my iTunes wouldn't run, and it told me that I didn't have the most current version of OS X. I figured I needed to run system update, etc, but came to find out I have 10.4.8 and there were no more updates. Later on, I tried to install a new program, and it tolded me the minimum requirement was 10.3.9, so it wouldn't install. I'm confused now because I have a higher version. I've also noticed that all my pictures will only open in graphic converter and when I try to change which program they are opened in it automatically goes back to graphic converter. Some of this kind of sounded like the loop-a virus/trojan/whatev, but I never opened a file like the one it said you needed to in order to get it. Any ideas? I called a mac technician and he was at a loss.

Disk Utility, select your HD, click verify, then repair.

Unless there's some advantage that I'm not aware of.

It actually said I had to verify before repairing, but when I tried to verify it failed each time.

OK.
Try booting from the installer DVD. (Hold down "C" while booting up)
And select "Disk Utility" from the one of the menus on the top of the screen. (it's in a sub-menu. Utilities I think)

Then choose "Repair Disk".
If that works, now try repairing permissions.

Definatly a possibility, make some backups!

I've always had to verify before doing a repair. Don't confuse a filesystem repair with a permissions repair.

repaired the hard drive and it didn't fix anything.

Make a backup, then wipe the drive clean and make a fresh install.

If that doesn't fix it, maybe you should take it in because it will be a hardware problem. If that's the case, you can just restore the backup, and you'll be up and running again once the hardware problems get fixed, if that's the issue.
