I have 40 gb of free space but it says "failed - disk full." when I try to download Edge. Same thing happened with Brave (failed - download error).

I noticed that since it had only 8gb before I purged some things to get it to 40gb, it was still reflecting the old number, so I had to restart it and now it works.

Download DiskWave from here:
It's small in size and free.

Open DiskWave and go to the preferences.
Put a checkmark in "show invisible files".
Close preferences.

The DiskWave window shows you all your drives in plain English (no ridiculous graphical formats).
Click on any drive.
Now, you'll see what's ON the drive, listed in order of "largest to smallest".
You can easily locate what's eating up your space.

You didn't mention the size of the iMac hard drive. You need to keep 20-30% free for best performance.

Is that better than Disk Inventory X?
