‘Not enough space for backup’

so I went ahead and got the XsMax 512 GB because i had already filled up my previous X.
I have a 2015 iMac retina 5k with the 1TB DRIVE. when I go to back up I get the message there isnt enough room and cant back up.
I have now gone to the extreme of removing a ton and have 550GB on that drive. STILL getting the message! I even deleted all prior backups in iTunes.
Is anyone else experiencing this? How much space do i need on the computer to back up this phone? I only have about 240GB of files on the phone.
This is driving me crazy. Has Apple created a problem for those of us backing up to computers and not iCloud?

Have you checked your Mac for purgeable space? iOS backups are smaller so it should take less than 240 GB, but iTunes backups can't ask to clean up purgeable space so this can be a problem.

When you say pureable space do you mean just stuff I can trash? I have freed up 550 gb so would think this should be enough for a back up.
Does the space requirement of the iMac only consider how much is actually stored on the phone (i.e. 1:1) or the total capacity of the phone.
No one else is seeing yhis issue with their backups?

If you launch Disk Utility, then select your storage drive, you will see how much purgeable space that you have.
"Purgeable" is not "stuff you can trash". It is space reserved for files and apps that you can re-download, if you need those files. That space is freed up when the system needs it. You can't remove files that are designated purgeable, but the macOS system removes them when space is required

I'm having the same issue on one of my operator's macbooks.
Importing his 2011 data to outlook 2016, requires more space, and the syst does not clear the purgeable storage -.-
Been creating files with dd but no success..

Then, it would seem that MacBook needs to have more storage.
How much space is available on the drive?

I'm having this issue also, when backing up my iPhone. I think I backed it up when I first upgraded the Mac (27" retina from 2014) to Mohave a couple of weeks ago, but when I tried today i got the "not enough storage space on this mac to back up the iPhone" error. I've got 138 GB free, which should be plenty. Any ideas? The new disk utility doesn't seem to allow for checking permissions like it used to, not sure why.
