Not even Safari works correctly?

Okay, so I've seen a lot of issues with third party apps and minor changes with El Capitan, but I've had a completely different experience. I first upgraded from Yosemite, then did a clean install... with the same result. The clean install just has web browsers installed, nothing special at all.

Everything seems to be broken. Pages in Safari will regularly cause the tab to freeze where it cannot even be closed. Chrome (and Chrome Canary) take minutes to open sometimes, other times open instantly.

Messages gets out of sync and won't show new messages as they come in.

Third party apps often do the same thing - they'll freeze and never open, and other times open instantly and work fine.

What gives? This Macbook is a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010) - 8GB of RAM, fast SSD, etc. I use it as a backup but tested El Capitan before upgrading my primary machine. How am I having so many issues with basic stuff like Safari when it seems nobody else is having these issues?

Maybe it's a hardware issue, or you have some old and incompatible kernel extension installed. Or Flash is installed.

Did you read the messages in Console.app?

does sound like it could be an issue with the SSD; i had to have mine replaced (lots of beachballing etc)...

Yes I would go with the above too. Run first aid in Disk Utility. If no problems noted there I would suspect a hardware issue.

Out of curiosity how old was the SSD, how heavily was it used, and what type? Just curious.

Regarding Safari, I've had problems with it completely loading some pages. It's sort of as if it either can't (or won't) display everything when loaded, like it can't recognize content size.

my SSD died literally just before the end of applecare (thank you, SSD gods!). you might try exporting your bookmarks, then resetting safari completely (then re-import your bookmarks). also worth trying things out at another location...to be sure your wifi (or whatever) isn't causing any issues...

Safari sucks for me also...beachballing all the time, bugs with top sites where clicking on the top site I want to visit does nothing and I have to close the safari window (not quit the app) and reopen it to get top sites to respond again...its really just terrible to the point where I had to just ditch safari all together and go to chrome even though I prefer safari
