iPhone Not every song is listed under and artist in iTunes

Help a confused a person out, please!

For some reason under various different artists in my iTunes library on my phone, it will say something like "The Fray 6 Albums 47 Songs," but when I click on it, it only shows a few songs by that artist. I have confirmed that the other songs are indeed on my phone and playable, but for some reason they just don't show up under that specific page.
It's a really weird problem, and I'm not sure how to describe it better than that.
Any suggestions?

I have the latest iOS and iTunes update as far as I know.

How did you get the other songs?

I feel stupid. I explored some more and realized that the songs are also in subcategories by album if your artist has several albums.
I simply didn't notice because so many album names are also song names.
