Apologies if this question has been asked before but I did a search and couldn't find anything. I can't wear in-ears (they hurt too much) and I have loved the fit of Gen 1 (mine broke after after 1.5 years). I'm not sure whether to just get the Gen 2 or to wait for Gen 3. Maybe there's a possibility they would announce them this March during the launch event? Any thoughts?

According to Wiki, AirPods 1st Gen were announced on 9/7/2016. 2nd Gen were announced on 3/20/2019. If you decide to wait, it may be a while (or not).

Thanks. According to the Buyer's Guide, it's at 'Neutral' and 'mid-cycle' - that's why I was a bit confused. There's a big gap in release dates between Gen 1 and Gen 2 and each quite far apart in month of release, so I'm confused as to what the planned release month is.

FWIW, the AirPods 2 had 2018 dates printed on the box which indicated a 2018 release and it was believed that they were delayed to launch along side AirPower which was eventually scrapped. May not be as long as you think, but the truth is, nobody knows when or even if they will be announced. You could be waiting a few months, years or forever. The 2’s with wireless charging case are great. I’d get them again if mine crapped out.

OP, when you say you “can’t wear in-ears (they hurt too much)” is that because of pressure or feeling in your ears? I find the APP don’t cause pressure in my ears due to the design incorporating venting.

I’d be concerned there are no rumors of a gen 3 classic airpod. It’s likely apple will update these at some point with better sound and perhaps a shorter stem but as others have said it could be a long wait. I predict the next big evolution in the line will be the pro model with integrated health features.

Hey buddy have you been able to try the AirPods Pro? The reason I ask is whilst I much prefer in ear earphones rather than the original AirPods/EarPods (I can never get them to balance or my ears and they always sounded lacking to me) and the new AirPods Pro with the silicone and non plastic bit that usually with inner ear earphones sticks in the ear is absent in design with the AirPods Pro. They are very very comfortable.

I think the AirPods will stay as they are - a bit like when Apple introduces a new design iPhone and the old design just stays on sale looking drab for many years.

Personally, I feel that Apple should drop the AirPods with Wireless charging to 159 and keep the Pro at 249. Totally get rid of the 199 AirPods as they really are not worth the price.

I really wouldn't hold out for update basic AirPods - just like the EarPods that haven't changed since 2013, they'll just stay there I feel.

But pleasssssse try the AirPods Pro as I feel that they are incredible in every way. I travelled with them over the weekend and they were yet again, a true delight. Listening to Apple Audiobooks with Noise Cancelling on is a lovely experience. Battery life on a long haul flight no problem - after 4 hours just put them to charge whilst you go to the bathroom or have a lunch / dinner etc and they are good for another 3+ hours.

No matter what size of APP I tried they all fell out of my ears when I was working out. I had better luck with standard Gen 2 Airpods and will likely go back to those in the coming weeks.
