I did my first video export test with some footage I took earlier this month and, frankly, there's not a lot in it between the 2020/2021 iPad Pros.

Now it's a short sequence, with no big transitions or blends or LUTs really. But still, kinda surprising.

Honestly its really to be expected. The M1 in the iPad Pro isn't going to be a huge leap over the A12x. Apple was already using their own chip in their iPads so the gains here are going to be marginal at best. You are paying for the screen, 5G, and a minor speed bump. There is increased RAM but it isn't going to make much of a difference.

The M1 and 8-16GB RAM may come into it's own further down the line as the base requirements of iPad OS get steadily notched up. Going forward iPads seem likely to receive at least 7 iOS versions, and possibly even longer security support on whatever version they get left behind on, so it's conceivable you could still be using an iPad bought today in 7,8,9 years time. If you plan on holding on to it for 5 years or more, the M1 certainly seems the better option, though if you're likely to upgrade again in 3 or less, and you really don't care about the mLED display then it might make sense to go with the 2020 if you can find it on sale at a good discount.

FWIW it sounds like the next release may be a redesign, given the talk of a glass back, though I don't really see an all glass design, probably more like a glass window in the back ~3" square to allow for wireless charging pass through.

Tbf, we haven’t seen any updates to LumaFusion since the M1 has been released. No optimization has been mention for M1 iPPs.

Yeah, I was hoping for more graphics power. I use LumaFusion on the iPad and it isn't a very smooth experience.

In benchmarks the M1 is a big leap over the A12Z. Which shows that benchmarks aren't everything. The A14Z in the iPad Air was definitely a smaller margin over the A12Z (seems that in most cases the A14Z is 20% faster than the A12Z and the M1 is 20% faster than the A14Z.

I don't know if this is outlier until I test a little more. I don't mind doing two exports....

Just tried again on a 7 minute video and ....well, the M1 came out about 3-4 seconds ahead on the export.

I'll pop over to the LumaFusion forums and see what folks are reporting.

Lategamer, just want to point out that the iPad Air 4 uses the A14 bionic chip, the exact same as in the iPhone 12 range, not an A14Z like you stated (A14Z does not exist, but some people would say that the M1 chip is what the A14X/Z would have been). But i understand what you are saying though.

I love LumaFusion so much--made a lot of good stuff with it on iPad Pro. It runs surprisingly well on my MacBook Air too. I need to see some improvement to the UX for that app in Monterey though, or I'm going to have to pony up for FinalCut. Running iPad apps on Mac still isn't great. I have my fingers crossed that help is actually on the way.

I appreciate the correction :)
