Not recommended: Using MyWi and heavy usage.

So I recently jailbroke my iPhone 3GS on 3.1.2 using blackra1n. Works great and I love it like when I used redsn0w. So I found this app called "MyWi" that essentially turns your iPhone into a Wifi hotspot by using the wifi chip to send out broadcast packets.

So I attempted to see how much bandwidth I could really pull out of it, and I got up to about 150KB/s incoming and 50KB/s outgoing.

So about, 1.1Mb/390kb.

But, as I was running uTorrent and had about 10 64 megabyte files downloading from a speedtesting website, I noticed that even with the iphone plugged directly into the wall, with the screen off, the charger could not actually keep up with the power demands. So I checked it once, it was 84% and was plugged in, I shut the screen off and looked 5 minutes later, it was down to 82%.

So just for your information, if you are going to use MyWi (which is a great app) to tether multiple computers, don't try to demand A LOT out of it. The charger wont keep up. LOL

That's pretty crazy. My charger keeps up even when playing games online. Are you plugged into the wall or computer. When plugged into the computer it doesn't draw near as much power.

I'm talking straight plugged into the wall.

Extreme usage made it do this and the phone got pretty warm lol.

If u were using wifi to share the phones connection of course it will use a lot if power. ur using both 3G and wifi, the two most power hungry feature on the phone. If u try it again with connected using USB or BT, the official way to thether, the charge should be able to keep up

This happened to me with normal tethering

Before I upgraded to 3.1 firmware, I used tethering on my 3G iPhone. When I used the phone for normal internet use it was able to charge normally.

However, when I used bit-torrent (downloading at 2.8mbps), the phone stopped charging and got really hot.

This was normal tethering, not using any software or jailbraking the iPhone, so I guess this behavior have nothing to do with the MyWi application.

I also tried using bluetooth for tethering and charging my phone with the wall charger, however the result was the same. Maybe when using the wall charger you can achieve higher speeds while still charging the phone, but I can say even with the wall charger, the phone was not able to charge when downloading at 2.8mbps.

The most important thing here, is the overheat issue. This could be dangerous if the phone is used for large periods. If the battery wasn't drained, I guess the phone could die from overheating after a long period of use at such high temperature.

Seriously. Tethering for web use, email and even the occasional small download is ok but torrenting?

People like the OP should be permanently banned from the network and charged per kb outside the data plan. That would teach them a lesson they are sure to never forget.

I agree that this is an extreme use of tethering and not recommened. Come on people, use your heads. You are expecting a bit much here!

Actually what you're experiencing with the charger not keeping up is a good thing. Back when PdANet was a hit, it said that when the tethering from the iPhone gets to be too much, it slows down the charge process or disables it so you're iphone doesnt get too overheated trying to keep up with what you're doing.

Well I agree with how torrents are a stupid idea for tethering and I understand the concern. I was simply testing the tethering process by demanding as much as I could and I simply reported back that IF you do demand this much the phone can't keep up. Normal usage like email and checking facebook are not going to demand as much power to do so.

But then there is the exception of people in the middle of America who don't have many broadband options so they might demand this much out of tethering.
