I have participated in the public betas since the beginning but so far my copy of El Cap has yet to upgrade to the GM or released version... what gives?

10.11 Beta (15A278b) is the version I see under About This Mac and going to App Store updates shows nothing to update. Is this the GM version or am I still missing something? How do I bump this thing up to the released version without losing everything?

It should be under the Purchases section in the App Store as OS X El Capitan Release Candidate. At this point though you may as well wait until tomorrow when it is officially released in the App Store.

In fact, I would expect that the El Capitan listing in your Purchases tab will probably change to the final release tomorrow.
Watch for the announcement, probably on every Mac site you can find. Try the App Store, and click on the El Capitan listing in Purchases - or use the El Cap listing on the Featured tab. I bet it will show up pretty quickly.
Oh, good luck on a timely download. Apple's servers will likely slug right down for a few hours. Depends on where you are in the world, I suppose.

The GM candidate is a standalone full installer download, NOT AN UPDATE.

But, since the release version is out soon, there's no point in downloading the GM candidate installer now.

haha, ok so i downloaded the GM candidate and installed it anyway and it works, it piped me the 10.11.1 update as well... i didn't realize the GM was a full install and not incremental. I think mavericks GM was automatic for me as a public beta. Guess I will get bumped somehow tomorrow as well.

and you know what, it sounds so tired but for real safari is snappier... actually everything is much snappier and it seems to have fixed the video driver issue where it would boot me to a black screen as long as my 27" led cinema display was plugged in. boots properly now. am sure it cleaned up some bad files and configurations along the way. graphics all around are much snappier. dead serious. think i am finally feeling the metal advantage of el cap for once.
