not worth jailbreaking new model iphone?

hi
when i bought my iphone at xmas i read up on jailbreaking, and my conclusion was that if i did it to my new model iphone, there would be negative side affects, as apple have put things in place in phone to counter attack hacking the phone. So it was risky, so i havnt done it.

has the situation changed at all?

seems like the older models, the hacks for those are more reliable and hassle free.

any advice, thanks.

any new model iphone users jailbroken and went ok?
 
The only drawback on the tethered JB is that it needs a computer to re-boot the phone. Some say that the WIFI goes out, others don't have that problem. Don't know if they will ever crack iBoot to allow non tethered JB.
 
If they do announce a new phone, Ill still get it and suffer without a JB until it isnt tethered. If that means keeping my JB 3G on me, then so be it, but I want new hardware.
 
I jailbroke a friend's newer model 3GS, and it is very inconvenient. Unless I was doing it wrong, not only do you have to plug into a computer, you also have to run the jailbreak program again.

It's inconvenient because many packages in Cydia require a reboot. I suppose once you got everything set up, you couldn't tell the difference. But I like to reboot my phone every now and then.

never heard of tethered JB.

so when the phone crashes and its not working properly.
this is when you have to re-boot isnt it?????
this happens a fair few times in my experience.
ive only had phone for 1 month.

so tethered JB is the only option for me?

ahhh so i can try it and if i dont like or if its annoying, i can go back to factory state.

The jailbreak for the 3gs iphone is known to have some problems and every time you reboot you have to plug it into the computer and have the blackra1n app running. I don't think that it is that inconvenient unless your installing a bunch of stuff from cydia and you have to reboot afterwords. I think that the jailbreak is worth the inconvenience. If you end up not liking it you can always restore in itunes and go back to the original factory settings.

It's VERY inconvenient if you ever have to leave the house. If you have a problem with the phone and call AT&T, what's the first thing they ask? "Are you using the phone in question for this call?" and why do they ask that? Because they're going to do something and then ask you to restart it. If you install garbage software or Backgrounder you will eventually have to restart it. If the hardware has problems like wifi not working correctly or the phone not being able to connect to a service you'll have to restart it. And it's not quite as simple as just being around a computer. You have to have a computer that's capable of running the hack that will force the phone to boot which eliminates a lot of office computers and all public computers that I've seen. I jailbreak for one reason....Slingplayer via 3G...and even that's a pretty weak reason considering the dozens of other phones that can do the same thing without any alteration. If you don't have a specific need, don't bother.

Why would you call AT&T about a problem with your iPhone? You might as well ask a random person on the street. If you aren't capable of troubleshooting your iPhone without help from AT&T you should not be jailbreaking in the first place.

Okay, let's set you straight. Jailbreaking != pirating. There are a great many reasons to jailbreak your phone that have absolutely nothing to do with piracy: the ability to customize your phone, to save and edit files, to install themes, add wallpaper, to run programs in the background, to extend your lock screen, to access hidden settings Apple won't allow, to unlock your phone to work with any carrier, to use your phone for data storage, to remove restrictions on 3G data, to enable internet tethering...the list goes on and on. By jailbreaking your phone you can turn it into a complete miniature computer system with all the power and flexibility that implies.

It is true that jailbreaking allows you to install unsigned code on your phone, and that opens the door to piracy, but piracy is most definitely not the only or even primary reason most people jailbreak.

Also, a word of caution: discussion of piracy is not allowed on this forum.

you can but to mention it in this forum is against the code of conduct! if you are not a heavy user then why bother at all...easier to purchase your apps than to "muck" about....
 
When "out and about", just refrain from running Cydia or installing new programs that might require a reboot. Do those things when you are at home near your computer/tether.

P.S. Where's my Dongle? :D

ive got a one month old iphone, brought brand new.
and ive had to reboot (power off and on) numerous times.
only downloaded about 5 free apps. 2 songs in ipod.

say if phone crashes and you cant reboot when youre driving home from work. And then you break down. And so you cant even phone the breakdown car recovery. Living in UK with our weather, this is a situation that will make you very very very unhappy.

seems like my macbook and iphone slow down a tad when exposed to cold rooms even...

Something is wrong with your iPhone if you have to reboot it that often. I don't think I've ever had to reset my phone except when installing Cydia apps or new firmware. The iPhone shouldn't just crash on you...it's designed to run for weeks or months without rebooting.

is powering off and on what it means to reboot??

sometimes the graphics on home screen disappear as if like theres no ram or something, i gotta press the buttons a few times for it to be ok.

and now when load up a game, there is a black screen for a few seconds, this didnt used to happen.....like a lag...before the game starts.....
 
Turning the phone off and back on is a restart, yes, and you need to run blackra1n (or whatever) when you do that. There are plenty of other reasons it could restart. As mentioned, installing some software (albiet very few of them) requires a restart. I've seen them restart when dropped even a couple inches onto a hard floor or desktop, plugging them into an outlet charger and for no good reason at all. Plus, once you jailbreak you open yourself up to all kinds of less than desirable (unstable) software that could force you to restart by freezing the phone and if you call AT&T for pretty much any reason, they'll want you to restart. Whether or not you jailbreak the phone is pretty much up to your personal habits and some common sense. If you use the phone a lot and run the battery down quickly and can't get to a viable boot computer easily, I'd think twice about it. If none of that is a problem, do it and keep an eye on the phone and your usage of the phone for a week or two and see if any problems crop up.

As an example, I work from home and control my own computers so restarting the phone isn't really a problem for me almost any time of day, plus the phone seems solid and the only thing I've installed that isn't from Apple's store is 3G Redirector and I'm comfortable with that app. No real problem with jailbreaking there. In March, however, I'll be 1000 miles from home for the entire month with a couple of 14 hour drives through nowhere. I'll have my Macbook Pro with me but I still don't want a half hacked phone being my only means of communication. It just makes sense. So by then I will either have restored to the Apple system or I'll take my WinMo phone instead since that does everything I want without having to hack anything. Oh...and it has vastly superior reception. Yes, seriously. :)
