I don't have a problem with the notch but most people hate it...

I hated the idea in the beginning, then I decided to get the XS Max in 2018, never bothered me, so no issues on my current 13 PM.

In 2017 the notch was fairly futuristic. It ushered in the removal of the home button and embraced gesture control. Dynamic island is a solution to a non-existent problem.

I prefer the way they use it compared to the notch, but I prefer the notch for the viewing experience. When the pill and hole punch first got leaked, I said it was ugly. However, after seeing its use, I wish they had left it as a pill and hole punch. It would be a bit less invasive for content viewing. They could still fill in the whole pill when notifications pop up.

The problem with the notch is that it gets more and more dated with each passing year/refresh. Back in 2017 the notch was an acceptable compromise for a then state-of-the-art (almost) full front display, but in 2022 the competition is shipping phones with under display cameras.

But I suppose I'm beating a dead horse - we all know that 2017's Apple had Jony Ive and 2022's Apple doesn't.

Please list the phones that have under the display cameras. I’m not aware of any.

The thing is Apple has Face ID which requires an IR camera and blaster which are not getting under a display any time soon. Plus physics dictates that a camera covered by a screen will always be worse than one that isn’t. So yes the competition may be hiding cameras but the quality of the image suffers.

With the DI Apple have made a clear commitment to Face ID and having an uncompromised front facing camera.

I never have understood the big problem some people have with a notch? Isn't the Dynamic Island just a "Dynamic Notch"? The only difference I have noticed using my iPhone 14 Pro is it is harder to figure which end is up unless Always-On is active?

You know the funny this is the original notch cuts much less deep into the display than any of the new ones hahaha.

I do prefer the Dynamic Island for sure though, it looks so futuristic when the Dynamic Island is, well.. being dynamic.

Even though the pill shape now cuts a bit more into the screen the portion on top kind of makes your brain fill in the space.

The notch evolution from 2017 to 2022 must be the slowest animation in human history of a bubble pill coming into the screen.

The implementation isn’t perfect and when it comes to Apple they try to get to perfect as close as they can. Smaller companies like the Chinese ones take more chances because their standards are not the same as apples. So as you read in the article there’s some sub pixelation going on in the area for the cameras under the display and even one of the phones have been described as having what looks like a little dirt under the display where the housing is.

I don’t want half assed crap. I’m fine with the iPhones current evolution and user experience. But yeah you should go indulge yourself with the foldables and the under stuff display that some androids offer. Then come back and report to us and tell us how the overall experience is. Now that would be constructive

Remember, every other solution may work for unlocking facially, but they don’t do the level of 3-D mapping and may be easier to cheat. It’s not going to be easy for Apple to hide the notch under the screen With current face-ID performance.

Great points, and in an older 3D Dummy test, only the iPhone's Face ID wasn't fooled up against
other Android devices.
I'm not aware of any newer tests, but at that time, that was the result.

There is no way a camera with a display over it will perform on par to one without

I’ve never had a problem with the notch. When I first saw the pill and hole punch, I hated it, but it wasn’t going to stop me from upgrading my 12 Pro Max. 2 weeks later and I still love my 14 Pro Max like the day I unboxed it.

I remember not liking the notch at first too. But then I got my 11 and since then it hasn't bothered me at all.

The Mitch never bothered me and neither did the Dynamic Island. I enjoy the extra functionality of the island and the fact that it’s not static like the notch. I think the island is here to stay until Apple figures out how to hide the Face ID module under the screen.
