Note 3 vs S4

Hi,

I am a longtime Apple user and have finally decided to take the jump over to an Android smartphone instead of my iPhone. I really like the rumors of the Note 3, but I am also interested in the S4. I especially like how the Note devices have huge battery life and the even bigger screen, but I'm not sure if its worth waiting for instead of just getting the also amazing S4. Do you think I should wait for the Note 3 or get the S4 now. Thanks in advance for your input--I greatly appreciate it!

I'm in the same boat as you. Personally I'm waiting for September/ October. I believe we will know what the Note 3 is by then. And the next iPhone should be out.

The only thing keeping me with an iPhone is iMessage.

Another thing to consider. The Note 3 screen may be bigger than the Note 2. Would you be okay with a 5.9 inch screen if that's what they did?

10 weeks to see what comes out is a small amount of time compared to how long you will own either device for, especially if your getting it subsidised on contact.

Asking folks opinions on what at the moment is a 'mythical' device in comparison to an 'available' handset is impossible for anyone to answer definitivly if the Note 3 is worth waiting for.

However given spec Rumors it looks like it will be a much more powerful sounding device than the S4, especially if you are looking into the performance of whichever device you choose in 18-24 months time...

If you update every year, no big deal. But if your looking towards the future, just wait out the few weeks until its unveiled and then you can make a proper educated decision, rather than one based on desire and impulse for the now!

I am waiting for Note 3 as well.

I had a note 2, and S3 and briefly used S4. (currently have iPhone 5)

I have been upgrade eligible since May 2013. So need to use the upgrade (u gotta use upgrade or else u are just giving post paid carriers money)

So by Sept I can see what Note 3 , new iPhone to compare with.

I expect the Note 3 to have virtually identical specs to the S4, except of course for the size of the screen and the S Pen. I have been using an S4 and I really like it for the most part- I wouldn't mind checking out a Note 3 when they come out and possibly switching.

For all the flack I've given Samsung over the years I very much agree with this. I find myself using the s-features more and more everyday. This is actually the first time I haven't reverted to a custom rom like CM as my daily driver for fear of losing these features.

What's the best use of the s pen? Last phone I used with a stylus was a Palm Treo. I know the S Pen is totally different and they don't compare. I will have to try it out.

You're asking whether you should wait for an unreleased device or not. We have no idea what the Note 3 will be like.

It'll likely be the same old thing with a spec bump unless we see design 3.0 this year.

Also keep in mind that the Note 3 is usually a "bigger" S4 with a faster (albeit unnoticeably) processor. Last year I had an S3, and I upgraded to the Note 2 upon release.

I was able to get use to the size but I missed the more pocketable, more useable S3. I kept the Note 2 until the S4 launched. I won't be getting the Note 3 unless it's just killer amazing.

I picture the Note 3 being like this:

Take an S4 and up it's screen to 5.5-5.9 inches. Keeping the same little sparkle effect the S4 launched with, keep the 1080P screen, and all the new TouchWiz gimmicks.

Add on probably a Snapdragon 800, and tada. Note 3.

I doubt the specs will be virtually identical. The Note 2 and S3 have very different specs. unless you're comparing the international versions

At present, I have the first generation Note, and in no way is it like the Treo with the stylus. Samsung has really perfected the S-pen. The problem is, you really need to try it; describing it will not suffice.

Even though you can use the Note like the GSIII or 4, with the S-pen, it's on a different level. Obviously you can take fast Notes, but it is very functional and efficient navigating. Also, the multi-window feature is greatly enhanced.

In early Sept, we should know most of the specs (if not all). That's less than 2 months. Hopefully, it's released in early Oct?

If the S-pen doesn't interest you, I recommend getting the GS4 and enjoy it's nice features and admittedly better pocketabilty. But since you remember the Treo, wait the relatively short time and try before you buy.

If you can wait till Oct-Nov, do so cause I do believe the Note 3 will be awesome. But if you can't wait, I would either get the Note 2 or S4 now.
Both are great phones you can use today.

Thanks to all for your input. I ended up ordering an S4. I tried out a Note 2 again and decided it was a little too big. Especially since Samsung may make the 3 even bigger... The S4's screen is still a great improvement over the iPhone 5.

note 3 will likely be the same as the S4 just bigger with the S pen and bigger battery...and as I have the note 8.0..no need to have both as the big upgrade would be the size which is why I have the tablet

If you want a phone bigger than the S4, wait for the Note 3. If the S4's size works for you, get the S4. You won't miss the Note 3 if you are happy with the S4's size.

I suggest OP use the Note 2 and S4 to see what size you like best then go from there.
