Folks who have experience with previous Samsung launches: what's the typical availability in retail stores on launch date? Is it like with iPhones? Or walk in & buy? I don't want to preorder, prefer to just buy in a store. Which store usually has bigger stock?

Its a walk in and buy. However since the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are becoming harder and harder to purchase (online and in store). There could be some lines outside carrier stores. My experience is with Verizon Wireless only and the Note II and Note III were able to be purchased the day of release. I would expect the same for the Note IV. Pre-order now is pointless since you have two weeks left and pre-orders or probably shipping past the Oct 17 date. Verizon Wireless has ship date of Oct 23, AT&T has ship date of Oct 14, Sprint has date of oct 17.

If you treat the launch somewhat cautiously, as it is shaping to be a big release, you should be fine. Even casual walk-ins almost always get Note series phones on launch day. Also consider the preorder deals available from several places.

Be sure to *note* that some stores will not sell it outright on the first day or two since they're reserving stock for people with upgrades or new lines.

If it weren't for the Samsung $200 trade in promotion with pre order, I would just walk in during launch week and pick one up. I'm trying to wait until the last minute to pre order to see if Google will officially announce their Nexus phone.

You're interested in the oversized Moto X? What would make you consider ditching the Note 4 out of curiosity.

Actually, the opposite. If Google announces an oversized Moto X, that seals the deal on the Note 4.

If however, they announce a 5 - 5.2" Nexus, I'll have to think twice. I prefer stock, but not on a 6" phone. If I'm going big, I'm going Note.

it appears best buy already stopped taking pre-orders for the note 4, at least according to the slickdeals thread...

I've walked into TMO store on launch day for Note 3 and LG G3 and walked out with one. Only reason I pre-ordered the Note 4 was due to the $200 promotion or I would of done the same as before and waited until launch day to get one.

Probably not because of availability but because they will get slammed with $10 phones people want to trade-in. :)

Actually per the store I pre-ordered mine from it was availability. I ordered mine a week ago, and ATT and TMobile were sold out. Not that it mattered because I needed Verizon, but they had to triple check that

You only get the $200 trade in guarantee/rebate at Best Buy or Samsung with a verifiable pre-order tho.

And the way Best Buy did mine was I put a $50 deposit down that I instantly got a gift card for
