https://phandroid.com/2017/11/01/samsung-galaxy-note-8-freezing-issue/

This has me concerned because it seems like Samsung isn't being forceful enough with US carriers to quash major bugs or provide resolutions. Their 1-800 # is absolutely useless. I am thinking about borrowing an iPhone 7+ again until they fix the issue. If I get a hardware warranty exchange or repair, I get a refurbished device or refurbished parts.

I prefer Android since I can get direct downloads, a better file system, a headphone jack, easily accessible newer ringtone options, a SD slot, native quick charge outta of the box, better hardware, etc.

However, I am starting to reconsider my Samsung venture. I am way beyond on my buyer's remorse. The P-OLED screens LG use are very defective in nature on the Pixel XL 2 and the LG V30 has had its criticism with P-OLED as well.

With iOS, it feels like I am using a really child's play OS, but it just works better. If there are iOS 11 issues like there were, Apple takes care of it quicker since it doesn't have the stupid carriers getting in the way. I can go into an Apple Store and get support from Apple without issue. Samsung wants me to go get repairs all the time. Is it worth taking a less creative and highly restrictive OS just to get ease of mind? Or do I pay the price to get all the features I like with the Note 8? The Note 8 is a great phone when it works.

Battery life and this possible bug or hardware issue are getting annoying even though it doesn't happen as frequently to me as others. I am just worried about an emergency, using GPS, writing important emails to my boss, missing out on photos when enjoying events, not being able to use a lot of the features, etc.

Should I consider just buying the iPhone X? I am not trying to bring excuses to get a new phone because I just want to use something that works and stick with it for years. The X feels clunky gesture wise. Plus $75 for quick charge is absurd. No headphone jack means more dongles and no charging a phone while using the adapters. The 8 seems the best value, but it is also really small as well. I am really weary about using Swappa or eBay to sell phones because of would be possible scammers.

The 7 isn't bad, but it is too small. The 7+ is too bulky as well. I am going to try the iPhone X over the weekend. I would like to experience it, but I feel like I would want to return to Android because of its flexibility and more hardware options. But the X would give me more stability and reliability.

Do you have a Note 8? Have you experienced this yourself? I have had no issues like this and I heavily use the apps reported as a problem.

Yep, I have the Note 8. Happened to me with freezing and phone randomly rebooting when I needed my phone since I am under the weather. Apparently, Samsung says an update is coming out soon. But how soon because I don't want to even go to an iPhone 7+ temporarily because my work email is set up on my Note 8.

A safer bet would not be the X... that is unproven. I think the safer bet is an iPhone 8.... otherwise know as the 6sss.

Yikes, no way I'll commit to that for 2-3 years. Too many issues. 1 year is fine though. Well, I meant to say Note 8 vs iPhone X for the next 3 years or something like that?

Nope, it's because it sounds to me like you have already made up your mind.

If the Note8 is not doing it for you, get the iPhone X.

I haven't tried out the X. I like the Note 8 minus the issues I have with it. If I had the Exynos unlocked model with warranty support, wifi calling, and other amenities, I would keep it long term without issue.

Are the original reasons you liked / purchased the Note 8 still valid overall? And do you think it would be possible that Oreo, or other updates may resolve them (if you don’t already have it)

Side note on Ringtones.. Is it just the Pixel 2 that uses OGG files only, or, is that an Oreo thing? I spent an hour trying to get MP3s to work, until I realized it took a completely different file type than the Pixel 1 did. :( .

OK, I'll play along. What are the "too many issues" you would have with an iPhone 8? Of all smartphones out there, it is probably the safest and most refined choice. You'd pay more for an iPhone X which is a totally unproven design, and that will have less issues? Your logic is a bit whacked. And the "issues" you are basing all of this decision on I have not heard anyone else report but you. Maybe do a factory reset on your Note 8 before you decide to jump ship.

Most of the reasons are still valid: better file system, headphone jack, quick charging out of the box, dual cameras, SPen, Samsung Pay, Iris Scanner, build quality, high resolution screen.

What my expectations were better software support if there were bad bugs, good battery life. Performance wise, it held up. But battery life is underwhelming and the carriers make it hard to use a phone. It seems like the Pixel and iPhone are only two options for me because I love the Samsung features like Ad Blocking and Samsung Pass. But it's at the cost of quick resolutions to possible problems, carrier interference, heavy bloat, the Note 7 fiasco having rougher battery life, and then the curved display making it tough to get screen protectors.

Screen is too small, the design is too old school, it feels like a stop gap phone, and it will be relegated to a back burner feature wise. I rather buy a 7 than an 8.

I am going to wait for the X reviews because it looks like a few unknowns that are annoying like the gestures. I am just saying it's more reliable than Android since it's iOS. The 8 is a safer bet in terms of reliability since it's classic iOS and iPhone.

Honestly the Pixel you would want (due to less display issues) is the regular Pixel2, but, that will not meet the criteria of looking new or any less old school. Personally, I love my Pixel 2 (non XL), but I am not much of a stickler for design.

However, you are at the crossing of form and function already. You like the Note 8, the look, perhaps the feel of that type of device, but, it lacks some of the function and independence you desire.

Can you change out to a less carrier bloated version of the Note 8 in your area, or is that not really an option for you?

Pixel 2 seems solid, but the bezels are bad plus it has a 1080p display. Also not sure if I want to deal with the little quirks Google has. I rather just use a simpler phone if means less headaches, so Pixel or iPhone only two choices.

Hasn't happened to me yet...but maybe go into device management and let it clear your cache etc....and see if problem still exists. Otherwise Samsung will send an update soon. Lots of iOS 11 issues so this is not anything new with fairly new devices. I have no battery issues....
