Note 8 to replace iPad

I'm traveling lots for work at the moment and that always makes me think about traveling lighter!

Seeing as I'm not sure I'm going to stay on the Android side of the fence it got me thinking that maybe a Note 8 could replace my S8 and my iPad to simplify my tech. iPad is mainly used for light photo editing, media consumption and surfing but at 6.3" maybe the Note 8 is large enough to do this in a single device?

Had anyone else done this? Also does anyone use the Dex dock? Struggling to see the advantage over casting the screen using a chromecast dongle.

That's the way to go. All my tablets have disappeared or stuffed in a drawer since going phablets.

DeX is a better desktop-like experience than casting a blown up phone screen.

That's what it looks like to me, for £67 on Amazon it's worth a shot!

Just wish I knew whether living with a phone the size of the Note8 on a day to day basis was doable.

For me at least, while DEX is a nice concept but the problem is applications (phone UI on large screen) and the sheer slowness of the anemic qualcomm CPU.

If doing anything intensive like RAW photo editing or video editing which is use case where I would want a large screen, the A10X/A11 is up 4x faster.

When I did some testing on RAW photo editing of my Sony A7RII files or editing videos, the S8 struggled and it was a so slow. For general case, like web browsing and opening apps it is fine, but throw anything intensive at it and it was a pain to use. Your use case of light photo editing might not be as noticeable as to how slow it is.

Yes I have but used DEX but only with an S8. I doubt it would be that much different with a Note 8 (maybe Note 8 a bit faster because of more RAM).

It is a cool concept and works reasonably well for some use cases.
- web browser is good. Fairly zippy scrolling and decent web page loading speeds.
- MS Office runs fine on it (I don't do anything intensive), but since it is running on a big screen, you'll need the subscription to be able to edit.

Then we get into the issues
- Hardly any third party app is optimised for it. You'll be getting a phone UI in a window that is not resizable
- The Qualcomm CPU is to put it bluntly is pathetic for anything CPU intensive. Lightroom was SLOW. It is about 3X slower than my ipad pro (2017 model) and even slower than my iphone 6s plus (6s plus about 1.3-1.5X faster)
- Video editing with Premiere Clip was 4 times slower than my ipad pro.

I stopped using my iPad when I went to an iPhone 6S+, so the Note 8 with an even bigger screen definitely could. I further compressed by replacing my work issued Dell laptop and home Mac with a Surface Pro. So my travel kit has reduced in size by about 50%, and I do travel on very long international trips so I have really enjoyed the lighter kit.

I have not used DeX. I have my Surface Pro for larger things, and then use the dock in my office with a 4K display. I also an using the pen on both, and have everything in OneDrive and with OneNote editing back and forth with keyboard or pen works great.

Note8 is certainly more functional than any iPad but it's also down to if you need more screen real estate to do something.

I must say though, since coming back to the Note series, with the Note8, I am using my iPad a lot less again, it works more as a Wireless Hotspot as I have a large data plan on it's SIM.
