This is for my teacher friend-

I just got a new ipad air with the pencil. I do a lot of zoom meetings where I'm writing notes about different teachers and things i observe in their classroom. So I am replacing my pencil and paper (which i end up typing up later, and adding dates to google calendar) with the apple pencil.

I need to create tables/T-charts. I want to be able to easily organize them in some way, maybe a folder for Dan, a folder for Sarah, etc. I'm hoping the functionality of the pencil writing-to-text, and the auto-add dates to calendar all work. A friend recommended Notability so I bought it, but I cant find any way to create charts/tables as I write notes

All these notes would ideally link with google drive. The school district uses google drive and google docs. In my limited research it looks like the apple pencil does not work with google docs, is that really true?

Thanks for any help/guidance! if this works the way I'm hoping then this device would be a huge improvement to my workflow.

The built-in Notes app does tables these days, and works with any iCloud "Location" app, like iCloud itself, MS OneDrive, and Google drive.

I am a bit confused. Do you ask for a notetaking app for iPad and pencil or a note taking app for typing or both? On one side the pencil is mentioned, then there are talks about tables and typing. So the question is about:

  • app for note taking with pencil
  • app for note typing
  • mix of both above
  • app with OCR that can turn your handwritten notes to typed text

I don't use Google Drive myself but if you need typing note taking app, can't you create directly Google Doc file and upload it in Google Drive? Or you want to use the pencil and OCR.

I have heard about an app called Nebo that has OCR and can transform handwritten notes to text but I am not sure that it can create tables automatically.

Notability has OCR addin too that you need to pay for. I have not tested it. Notability does not give you the option to create tables directly but you can create with the pencil straight vertical and horizontal lines and thus produce a table. Not sure how OCR handles it afterwards though.

Goodnotes comes with OCR but it is not 100 % accurate and I would not use it for long handwritten text as it screws up the formatting and I need to correct enough stuff to not save me time as a process.

A note from my side though. Go directly with typing. It takes some practice in the beginning but it saves you time later on. The formatting you do with typed notes is different than the one you use with handwritten notes. Even if you use OCR, you would still have to go back and correct some stuff. Honestly it is easier to type directly the notes and use the pencil only if you have to do some sketches.

I think she wants the ability to write with the pencil and have it turn into text. I guess ideally she would be able to make edits by typing later, after its been converted. I believe the hope is to occasionally share these notes. She claims this works in a lot of places but does NOT work in google docs.

Do you use a keyboard attachment? Or type with the touch-screen keyboard?

I do have a keyboard folio case indeed and this is how I type. But I use OneNote for typing notes as I share them with my co-workers very often.

Indeed OneNote can support both work with pencil and also allows typing and creating tables. I am not sure that the OCR is that reliant though.
