Nope, none that I can think of. Both use the same OS and both are compatible with the Apple Pencil 2 (Air 4 and above)...so they work exactly the same. The Pro doesn't have any extra features in terms of note taking. Both are even compatible with the Magic Keyboard if you wanted to go that route. Assuming you're comparing with the smaller iPad Pro, both are roughly the same screen size (10.9" Air vs. 11" Pro).

If you're looking at the 12.9" Pro, then the only potential advantage would be the larger screen. Otherwise, everything else would still be the same between the two.

Generally speaking, the only major differences between the Air and Pro (respectively) are:
  • No ProMotion display vs. ProMotion display
  • One camera lens vs. Two camera lenses (additional lens is an ultra wide lens)
  • Touch ID vs. Face ID
  • No LiDAR scanner vs. LiDAR scanner
  • Two speakers vs. Four speakers

Does ProMation affect pencil use?
A little bit... That would be the 120hz vs 60hz display refresh thing kenni417 mentioned. Personally, I cannot tell the difference between the two...others swear by it and cannot go back to a 60hz screen.

Perhaps you could check them out at an Apple Store or Best Buy to see if it makes that much of a difference to you.

Thanks, my boss asked for a recommendation and I wasn’t sure if ProMotion would do much. I have the Pro myself.

I have the Mini 6 and the IPP 11” 2020. The former does not have promotion, the latter does. Do I find a difference in the screens? Tbh, yes I do, but it’s marginal. I write up notes on both using the Pencil and here I again find a marginal difference with the positive leaning to the side of the Pro. It’s that latency.

Would I buy a machine with promotion again? Probably. It’s irrational really given the marginal difference that I can see myself between the two iPads. But there you go. I use the iPads for work (90% of the time) and I’d like to think I am investing in my work-enhancing tools, which is, honestly speaking, a crock full of s**t. The saving grace is that I don’t upgrade my iPads very frequently. So, I accept this cost.

Promotion does make a difference. If you go in an Apple store they’ll let you compare them.

I use an Air for note taking and pdf annotation and it’s excellent. I’m an academic.

Same here. Except I use the Pro (well, aside from the Mini).

I switched from a pro to an air and I could not see much of a difference at all.

It’s noticeable when comparing them side by side but if you just use the iPad mini Air you probably won’t notice much of a difference after a while. I don’t miss ProMotion at all on my iPad mini 6.

Right. I have a samsung s7 tablet and the refresh is 120 … I can see a difference, but I’m happy with the iPad Air
