Ive been learning html at Uni using just notepad on windows and basically need the same sort of thing on my mac.

I thought textedit would do this but when I save a file with the .html extension it displays the source code in safari rather than the webisite.
 
Text Edit does do HTML to.

Use the preferenes to change the format of a new document to plain text.
 
I'm all about TextWrangler, too, but Smultron is another nice (and free) editor with syntax coloring, split window, and all the tasty extras. Worth at least a look to see if you prefer it to TextWrangler.
