I'm thinking about upgrading my iPad to iPadOS 18, but I wanted to confirm, if I upgrade to iPadOS 18, will my notes be accessible in the Notes app on Mac Sonoma? Because I remember once that I upgraded my iPad before my Mac, the upgraded iPadOS upgraded all my notes (in iCloud) in the Notes app, and when I tried to access these same notes through the Notes app in my Mac, it just said that the notes aren't compatible with the old mac Notes app version and with old Mac OS version, and it requested me to upgraded my Mac OS. I wanted to ask, if somebody has already for example upgraded their iPad or iPhone to 18, but is still using Sonoma on their Mac, so can you can still access the same notes (in iCloud) from all your devices. And how does the Math Notes show up in the Sonoma? Are those notes just empty?

Just checked on my iOS 18 and macOS Sonoma: Yes, Notes' updates work both ways.

The maths' notes show up in Sonoma with the results as paler fixed text after the equals sign

So, using iOS, 2*7=, will result in 2*7=14

Historically, Notes seems to be reasonable compatible across generations. Brand new features in latest may not work the same way or at all in older versions but I have found that generally, macOS generations and Notes tend to not be too big of a deal.

Beware of things like iWork apps if soon updated as they seem to love to tweak the file format so that anything saved in a newer version can't be opened at all in older versions. Best I can tell, that seems to roll on a last 2 generations basis. So if you are using macOS older than 2 generations before Sequoia, be careful about using iWork apps if updated soon.

The game seems to be to pull all older Macs UP or else they can't access core files. And if an older Mac can't be updated any further with macOS, the press is on to buy a new Mac (or trust the hack).

Anecdotally: I updated an iPad to latest yesterday but still have Macs on Sonoma latest (14.7). Soon after I got a text message from someone who had also updated their iPhone and only the iPad received it. It never popped up in Mac Messages. Historically, messages from them would appear in both. Perhaps this is just a coincidence? Perhaps not? TBD.

Thank you for confirming that the Notes work!

Good to hear that it could be 2 generations down until the compatibility is affected. I do know that the iWorks apps also sometimes loses the combatibility, but I think today I saw an update for iWorks apps for Sonoma. I don't know is it some kind of update to make sure that the iWorks Sonoma version works with newer generation iWorks.
