Notice to people encrypting drives in High Sierra

This was a surprise to me so thought i'd share: CCC discovered if you encrypt your HFS+ formatted drive in High Sierra it will convert it to APFS without telling you and then encrypt it. APFS is not backwards compatible so most (if not all) older operating systems will not recognize APFS formatted drives!

And also note that APFS formatted drives do not yet work with Time Machine. So if you encrypt a drive that you are currently using with Time Machine, it will be unusable afterwards. Instead, you will have to erase the drive and encrypt it during the formatting process (choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled, Encrypted).
