Notification badges sync question

Hi,

I noticed that my notification badges (the little red circles) don’t sync between devices e. g. for the Reddit app. I thought that this was also the intended behavior (even though I don’t like it ;-)). There’s even an old thread that talks about this in iOS 10 here on MacRumors (https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/can-someone-please-explain-why-ios-cant-sync-badges.2040598/).
However I realized that the syncing works e. g. with the Facebook App. When I have e. g. a red badge on my iPhone and iPad and I launch the app on my iPhone and check out the notification the badge also disappears on my iPad. So did in the meantime (somewhere between iOS 10 and 12) the developers get the option to implement this feature into their apps or is there even some option in iOS to control this feature for every app?

Unfortunately, it’s on by default, but I’m not sure if app developers have to put it in their app.

In terms of it syncing through iCloud, it falls under the random stuff that syncs in the background with no option, like Maps bookmarks syncing between devices.

The old link kinda gets into it, and basically, up to app developer.

Two kinds of notifications, local and push. With push notifications, developer needs a backend server that generates notifications and those are passed through Apple's servers.

Local notifications, no real communication going on back to app's servers, everything done on device.

In the case of something like an email app, Facebook, could be that they periodically wake up in background, asks the servers "anything new" or "any unread" and gets a response back of "yes, 3 new/unread messages". Post notification and update bubble. Facebook app has a long history of being a battery drain, and probably due to their app polling their servers incessantly, and since pinging so often, seems like the bubbles are updating in real time. Or Facebook might have implemented the push version (believe this is the case with Facebook as their app settings, iirc, has an on/off switch for push notifications).

Reddit, appears to have not implemented in their app any type of update mechanism. Another one is Yahoo's mail app as their bubbles do not disappear until app opened, if all read.
