One of the most annoying thing about previous versions of iOS was when you'd be passing by a WiFi hotspot that you don't care about and an annoying pop-up would display interrupting whatever you are doing. I was so happy to upgrade to iOS 5 to get rid of that with the new notification center thinking it would become a banner instead and not interrupt you. But I see they left this part unchanged.

Anyone know if this is possible or not? I see you can turn this notification off all together, which I might just do now that I see they have not fixed the type of notification I find most annoying.

Settings->Wi-Fi->Ask to Join Networks = OFF

Always been present even before iOS 5

Yeah, I knew that was present. I always lived with it because of the few times I am happy it lets me know there is a signal near. My assumption was that with iOS 5 I'd be able to change it to be not so intrusive.

Since it looks like this is still not possible, I'm rethinking even having it on in the first place (like you mentioned). Just wanted to throw this out there to see if anyone had any knowledge on how to change it to be a banner notification that I wasn't aware of.

Not possible, probably due to the likelyhood of there being multiple Wi-Fi networks from which to choose and a banner not being sufficient to show them all.

If you save wifi hotspots they will come up automatically even with "join wifi" off. In other words Starbucks, fave cafe, sports bar etc ... Less obtrusive only wifi you join.
