I have had Apple mail set to "Alerts" in Notification Centre (New Email creates an alert which needs to be dismissed). I had about 800 spam emails come in at once and now Notification Centre hogs the system resources trying to load all the alerts. It never manages to load them all before crashing and I have to force quit it before it reloads itself and starts all over again.

I have tried deleting all the spam emails, setting "Mail alert style" to "None" and restarting the computer. Notification Centre is still trying to load all these alerts. Is there away to clear them or otherwise fix?

Thanks Stefan but I'm not looking for a solution to stop the spam but to solve the problem with Notification Center.
There is unfortunately only three ways to stop this.
1,check and empty your mailbox every 2 hours or more often.
2,stop the spam as I described.
Or 3,di sable all notification s.

Thanks Stefan. Maybe I'm not being clear enough. I'm not asking for a solution to stop the problem reoccurring, I'm good with that, as you point out spam protection solutions are commonplace.

My problem is now that it has happened Notification Center no longer works. I can not find a way to clear the notifications already within the system. Everytime it restarts it trys to process all the alerts and eventually crashes.

Try inactivate notifications, open mailbox and delete spam, then do a full virus scan, and restart Notification Center.

Are you kidding?

Read the original question. I have already turned off the notifications and deleted the spam. Why you would recommend a virus scan is beyond me.

Honestly I'm grateful for the interest in my question but if you don't know how to clear the notifications from Notification Center then please feel free to leave the question for someone else to answer!

I disabled notifications, turned them off completely:
sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.apsd.plist

If you want to RE-enable them later, use this:
sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.apsd.plist

I found notifications distracting -- I don't need them, they're gone forever!

If it works as you described, the crashing notifications is caused by overflow, because of a spam virus in your system. Get rid of the virus, and the overflowing spam mails will be gone.

Absolute nonsense! Please stop replying.

Thanks Fishrrman. This is very useful, I also found this way of disabling NC. Its good to stop the crash but I actually use the notifications a lot (especially since Growl stopped being developed). After NC is re-enabled using this method the queue of notifications is still there...

Still looking for a way to clear the current notifications...
