Do you need to keep your applications open (i.e. not quitting them) for things to show up in notification center on Mountain Lion?

In ios you don't need to so i would assume the same for ML but don't take it from me someone else will confirm it.

Outside of Mail and Safari, no you don't have to have the apps running near as I can tell.

I wish Mail would act like it does on iOS. Having it run in the background to fetch mail for my exchange account would be awesome.
