My switch is pretty much always on mute. I kept getting some whatsapp notifcations when suddenly for one of them the notification tone played out loud. I checked my mute switch and flipped it back up and down and it didnt happen again. What gives? Has anyone else experienced anything similar?

If the mute switch is down but you accidentally push the volume up button it will turn the volume back on even though the switch is down. I think this is what happened here.

When you toggled the switch on and off again it muted it again

It played the notification tone through the speakers of the phone. Shouldn't that not happen no matter what volume button I press with the ringer switch on mute?

For the sake of clarity I am talking about this switch

Do you happen to have AssistiveTouch enabled? If so can you go to AssistiveTouch > Device > the icon on the rightmost should say "unmute" is your ringer switch is set to mute. If the icon on the rightmost says "Mute" you may have accidentally unmuted your device via this option since it functions regardless of your iPhone's ringer switch.

Yes I know what switch you meant and as I said if you press the volume up button while the mute switch shown on your pic is down it turns the notification volume on. Test it and see! Cheers

Even if it might show that the volume is increasing, notification sounds shouldn't and wouldn't be playing while the silent switch is enabled.

No it's definitely ringer volume that comes up on the screen here if I press the volume up button with the mute switch down .. it says ringer above the bell pic.
Cheers
It can be ringer volume that is being adjusted (if that is what it's set to in sound settings) but that ringer volume won't apply until the phone is no longer set to silent mode.
