Notification Weirdness, How To Delete Items?

In System Preferences/Notifications, I have 2 instances of Cocktail.

I have uninstalled Cocktail and 1 instance will be deleted and the other remains. Upon reinstalling, the second copy reappears.

I have also done a search with EasyFind to locate all Cocktail leftovers, but my quest has been unsuccessful.

After a prolonged discussion with Apple Support, the advice (from a level 2 tech) was to wipe the drive and then do a clean reinstall. Of course, I am reluctant to that.

I wonder (guess) if the problem is with Notifications and not with Cocktail. If it were in Notifications, where do you suppose it might be? Indeed I am perplexed. It seems to me there should be a file listing all the apps/files in Notifications. If so, might this be editable?

AFAIK, there are no resulting problems re this issue, but I do find it frustrating that removing an item from Notifications should be so bloody difficult.

All thoughs/suggestions most welcome.

Try resetting Notification Center:

Note: I haven't tested the following procedure.

1. Open Terminal.
2. Enter the following:
   
   rm -Rf "$(getconf DARWIN_USER_DIR)/com.apple.notificationcenter" && defaults -currentHost delete com.apple.usernoted dbName
3. Restart your Mac.

Richard2, I greatly appreciate your reply, but I am most wary of using untested Terminal commands, mainly because I am so ignorant vis-à-vis Terminal. So for the time being, I prefer to "pause" pending other possible solutions.

Did you try using the vendor uninstall tool in Safe Mode?

I'm not familiar with EasyFind. After the above, will it find any leftover property list files at : Library -> Preferences -> ByHost?

Yes, I did use the vendor uninstall. And also looked in the ByHost. No joy. Nonetheless, I appreciate your efforts.

Found this regarding duplicate entries of ClamXav. The post tangentially references an ASC THREAD. This 'reset' for Notifications Center is also discussed at MR HERE. The code is similar to what @richard2 suggested.

This is all I needed to do to get rid of the duplicate entries in El Capitan & Yosemite:
Open the Terminal application (found in /Applications/Utilities/).
Copy and paste each line of these commands into the Terminal window, in order. Do not try to type them in as a typo could cause loss of data. Press return after each line:

    cd `getconf DARWIN_USER_DIR`
    rm -rf com.apple.notificationcenter
    killall usernoted; killall NotificationCenter; killall cfprefsd

I did not need to restart even once, the database was rebuilt relatively quickly with no dupes
