I've noticed that if my MBP screen is off but the lid isn't closed, notifications will still appear. I still haven't decided if I like this or not, but if I decide on "not," where do I turn this off? A quick check of the Notifications and Screens prefs panels don't seem to list this as an option. Thanks.

What do you mean by "display is off" - is the Mac sleeping? If so, that would be Power Nap.

If it's just that the display is asleep from energy preferences, but the Mac is not sleeping - don't know that there is a solution for that.

Right, the display is off/asleep. It seems counterintuitive that a notification would wake the computer at such times, but it happens consistently.

Okay - look in System Preferences > Notifications, go to "Do Not Disturb", check box for Turn on Do Not Disturb "When the display is sleeping". That should do it.
