Notifications appear on both iPhone and Watch

So everytime i get a text message, my phone vibrates and the screen lights up. Then ten seconds later, my watch taps me. My initial belief was that if my watch is connected and my phone is locked, the notifications should just go to my watch, right?

Anyone have a solution?

That's weird my phone doesn't even light up and the notifications go to my watch

When I first paired my watch it did notifications on both iPhone and watch. Had to unpair bc pictures for my favorites didn't sync. Once I paired the watch again I only get notifications on watch. From what I've read it's suppose to only notify on the watch which I'm not really liking right now...
