I am at my wits end. Sitting here - notification comes through on my iPad but not on my iPhone 15 Pro. I have double checked all the settings and I’m not on any focus mode. If I open the phone I can see them on the Lock Screen but they don’t trigger the phone screen to come on.

I’ve also rebooted the phone and still no notifications will trip my black screen on.

Please help.

Several questions come to mind:

- Have you applied a (dark-looking/privacy/thick) screen protector? (But that shouldn't be an issue as long as you can confirm that the display can turn itself off during a phone call, i.e. proximity sensor working properly)

- Is your iPhone plugged in at the time you're experiencing this issue? Will the display turn itself on when you receive notifications while the phone is unplugged?

- Which iOS version are you on? iOS 17.0.3?

- Have you enabled the 'StandBy' mode? It seems like it is a common issue/bug where a user will encounter a black Lock Screen with 'StandBy' enabled as the iPhone is at a loss whether to enter the StandBy mode or not. Having said this, this 'StandBy' mode issue may not be the same you're facing because the top status bar (time, signal strength, battery) and the Home bar at the bottom are still shown while your issue is the display is completely off. It may still be worth taking a look:

The notifications are coming through to my iPhone but are there when I open up the phone and look at the screen. They don’t trigger the screen to open. When my iPad also gets the notifications it will pop up and the notification is there on the screen. The iPhone doesn’t pop on.

I tried turning off the standby mode.

Maybe I’m missing something. Will my iPhone not pop on as I’m also wearing the watch? I don’t remember this issue with my iPhone 12 Pro. 🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️

I understand what you mean.

Have you tried turning off the 'Attention Aware Features'? (https://support.apple.com/en-us/102216)
(but this Awareness thing may not be directly related to your problem either... anyway)

As for the Apple Watch part, when you're wearing your watch + when you've let that one specific app to send notifications to your watch + when the iPhone display is locked, yes, then only your Apple Watch will notify you. (https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204791)

For apps that have notifications enabled on your phone ONLY (i.e. disabled on your watch), your display should light up, and this should be the problem you're having now: the display remains black. But does it vibrate? Or make a sound when not in silent mode?

Maybe iOS 17.1 can help? Let's wait and see...

Okay, I think that’s exactly it!! I turned off notifications for messages on my Apple Watch and it did work. The next text I got did trigger my iPhone to light up the screen. Hooray!! So I need to go back through and see which notifications I want to trigger my phone vs the watch.

Thanks so much for responding. I have searched google and YouTube to no avail.

Please feel good that you made someone’s day. 🥳😍😁
