If you use Chrome and keep it open, you'll get the pop-up notifications. But if you don't want to keep a browser open all the time, there are dozens of apps that will put an icon in the menubar that will notify you of new emails... as well as allow you to read/create emails. Some are free, some cost a little bit. Most of them work the same, so it's a matter of taste.
