so all my notifications come in a huge wave once i open the smart cover and the ipad 2 becomes unlocked. this does not happen when i lock my ipad with the power button and leave the smart cover off/open. only when i close the smart cover...anyone else have this issue?

Cos with the screen locked it has them on the lock screen. The iPad knows the difference. It knows you wouldn't see them on the lock screen. I like that touch 
When you remove the smart cover you get the notifications pop up as a summary, like '5 emails' '4 Facebook notifications' etc.
Another example of how the smart cover is a major fail. Anyone want a black leather one in the Fredericton area, let me know and it's your for free!!!
Actually if you read the posts in the thread, it's not a 'major fail'. You're post is a major fail..... Unless you expect the smart cover to go transparent or something.....
