It looks like the iPad may share some of the same API's for notifications that are present in the iPhone as seen in this image:

Additionally, MobileMe users will also have access to the same Find my iPad and remote wipe features that are available to iPhone users.

I found this intresting...

"If you misplace your iPad, MobileMe can help you find it. Log in to me.com to view a map that shows the approximate location of your iPad. If it’s nearby, have it play a sound to help you find it, or display a message on the Home screen to help someone return it to you. The Find My iPad feature works best if your iPad includes both Wi-Fi and 3G, but it will also find your Wi-Fi-only iPad when it’s connected to a wireless network."

How exactly does it do that? Does the non 3g version have GPS after all?

it will not locate the iPad exactly, it will give you a radius around the iPad just like the iPod touch and original iPhone. it will Triangulate the location. The iPhone with GPS and the iPad with GPS will give you an exact location.

Wow...sorry just can't resist....

So you are saying the iPad is capable of "Remote Wipe"? Yes, Apple makes the coolest stuff around, next time I'm taking a dump, I'll ask my wife to hit the Remote Wipe button for me when I'm done!

That feature alone would make the $99 /year price tag of Mobile Me worth it.

Jeez they couldn't rework the notiification system for the iPad. I really hope they start setting it appart and more feature rich then just a big iTouch/iPhone.

Yeah this has become an interesting dilemma of sorts for Apple. Most of the on-board apps have been rewritten, some quite wonderfully, to take advantage of the iPad's screen real estate. And obviously Apple (and devs) hope that many more iPad-native/only apps get developed and sold. It means more work for devs to make 2 distinct versions, but if the sales justify the work then presumably it's not a problem.

On the other hand, the OS is a little trickier because Apple would obviously have to continue development down two separate branches in order to give the iPad a more robust back-end. Not that Apple is shy of resources in the grand scheme of things. Still, 1 path is easier than 2 :)

the remote wipe feature is a good feature as long as your phone has the password protect on. if it doesn't it is very easy for someone who knows anything about iphones or ipad to turn it off on the device.

just thought i'd point that out.

That doesn't sound correct... The original iPhone did triangulation through cell towers with its cellular radio, which the iPad (non 3g) will not have. What do you propose the iPad uses to triangulate its location? Without GPS or a cellular radio, the best it could do it a really rough estimation based on the IP of the WIFI network that the iPad is connected to.

That's what it will do. On the iPod touch, the "rough estimation" is often accurate to within a block.

iPod touch

iPod touch finds your location using known Wi-Fi hotspots. It also finds points of interest by keyword: Search for “coffee” and iPod touch shows you cafes nearby. the iPad will do the same thing.

I'm surprised no one mentioned this but your IP address gives a rough estimate of where you are located, depending on how your ISP organizes its ip distribution.
