Notifications seems to do nothing - am I missing something?

Upgraded to Mountain Lion about a month ago and never seen a single notification in Notifications. I've always used Growl and happy to see it still works as normal in ML but was sort of looking forward to seen how Notifications did it. I just went into the Notifications setup and it seems the only applications it supports are Calendar, Face Time, Game Centre, Mail, Messages, Reminders and Safari - of which I only use Safari (but never had a notification from that)!!!

To repeat the title of this Thread, am I missing something?

Sorry, excuse my ignorance (genuinely) but I thought Notifications was going to replace Growl - which I find really useful. Growl is telling me about things all the time, like things finishing downloading and uploading, processes finishing and I'm sure a few other things that I can't think of at the moment. As I mentioned, I've never had a single notification on Notifications - I just thought it was strange and I might be missing something that I should be doing or setting up!

Notification Center is more centered around apps. You can mess with the settings in System Preferences> Notifications.

Some bad things about it are that there seems to be no way to get push notifications. For instance, you have to have mail open to receive message notifications. Hopefully NC will have more useful features in OS X 10.9

Check out the application "Hiss". It's great and sounds like it's what you are looking for. It "forwards" your growl notifications to NC, so you get the support of growl apps, but with the integration of NC. It's simple but very useful.
