Notifications through headphones

My phone suddenly started playing notifications through the phone speaker even when headphones were connected.

I have spent some time Googling and fiddling about and suddenly the notifications are coming through the headphones again!

Can anyone shed any light on whether there is a choice to have notifications coming through the phone or headphones?
