Novelty Mac

I'm on my second Mac in less than a year, due to upgrade and had no problems whatsoever...

I'm wondering what people generally think is the best Mac to own for the sake of owning one? I'm very tempted to find myself a nice 12" PowerBook G4 and an iMac G4 just to play with - any other ones worth hunting around for?

iMac G4 would be my option there, I used to have one (sold it for a mint) and they were excellent machines. A little bit cramped and not many upgrade options, though they do look extremely good.
 
I would say 12" Powerbook

I think its my favourite computer ever...
 
To me the 12" PowerBook looks like the keeper on the portable side, and the iMac G4 for the desktop side. I want to get one of each - i just wondered if there were some other models that i should take a look at before going for these....

The only other recent Mac I can think of is probably a bondi blue iMac G3. It has to be bondi blue though.

Or, if you can manage to get your hands on one, a G4 Cube.
 
I'd say that having two laptops isn't really worth it just like two desktops isn't really worth it either. That's not to say that I wouldn't get another Mac for the hell of it though!! ;)

Out of the two, I'd go for the iMac. I've always wanted one of those (G4s). If I had the cash right now to throw away, I'd try to source a 20" G4 model, get a Mac Mini, upgrade the Mac Mini to a top speed C2D and try to work out a way to put it inside the iMac. One day!! :rolleyes:

I wouldn't go for the PB if I were you. Whlie they're fantastic machines, in my experience is if you have two laptops, one just gathers dust. If you have a desktop and a laptop then both tend to get use. :)

I've had all versions of that mix-n-match: two lappies, and they both got used a lot... one of each, and again both got used a bit, and also two desktops ehehe.. As i said, it's just to have one that i can still use with OSX 10.4.. iMac G4 vs G4 Cube...? I'm inclined to go the iMac route..

I agree on the Cube front but then you really want an old Apple flat panel display to go with it and the costs start going up. I wouldn't get a G3 iMac though. I've got one cluttering up space at home and still really regret getting it, its too slow to be worth anything and is too bulky.
 
After a bit of googling:

At worst, an iMac G4 will be a 15" G4 700Mhz machine with 128MB RAM, Geforce 2MX 32MB, CD-RW, 40GB Hard drive.
At best, an iMac G4 will be a 20" G4 1.25Ghz machine with 1024MB RAM, GeForce 5200 Ultra 64MB, DL Superdrive, 750GB Hard drive (after upgrades etc although unofficially the RAM might be able to go higher, BluRay etc or of course a Mac Mini mod).

At worst, a G4 Cube will be a 450Mhz machine with 64MB RAM, ATI Rage 128 Pro, DVD-ROM, 20GB Hard drive. Any screen apart from DVI-DL screens i.e. 30" ACD.
At best, a G4 Cube will be a Dual 1.7Ghz Machine (maybe more) with 1.5GB RAM, 9800 Pro, DL Superdrive, 750GB Hard drive. Any screen. (After upgrades, might be able to get more RAM, and similar things to notes for G4.)

Although the G4 Cube can go further with upgrades (ignoring Mac Mini mods), it would cost a small fortune to do so. The iMac G4 would b a much better buy imo.
 
heck, I'm about to sell the iBook in my .sig

I've had it for seven years, and it's been very loyal.

I haven't yet put my Macbook stats in my .sig; I guess I should do that.

Sold it for a mint? Your breath musta been pretty nasty... And yes, the G4 iMac definately gets my vote for novelty mac.
 
pb g4 (unless apple makes a 12" Macbook Pro)

G4 cube (you always can gut it an put a mac mini C2D 2.33 GHz in)

Apple iBook G3/300 in orange (one could probably gut it and put a macbook in. that would be my favorite project but the macbooks are a bit to expensive to try)

Macintosh plus (you would have to put a mac mini in there to make it usable...)
 
In my situation, I'd go with the Powerbook, just because I only have a desktop and would love the extra portability. However, I personally love the G4 iMacs, and would choose that if practicality didn't matter to me. :p
 
I think I'm going for the 12" Powerbook G4 while i can still get one in reasonable condition - I'm sure in a few months i can still get the G4 iMac in excellent cond - just worried that the longer i leave it with the 12" the greater chance of me getting a machine on its very very last legs.. Thanks for the thoughts folks!
 
for a desktop, get a mini. it'll be much more powerful than a g4 imac.

besides, the g4 imac was underpowered even for the time.

can't argue with a 12" PB, providing the price is right.
 
As i probably should've implied in my initial post, it doesn't even have to be powerful.. It's just about owning a nice looking bit of kit that can actually do something :D :D :D - Desk/Table/Shelf-candy
